One of my relatives was a riding officer in Yorkshire. I am assuming that this was nothing to do with horses but to do with the county. Does anyone know what a riding officer did ( or maybe still does!!)

I just did a search of Yorkshiers councils site and what ever the job was it dose not seem to be there now. Is that how the title appers on the Doc you have or is it with out the Hiphon. As one why it could meen what you think the other leves it open to other posabilates. Such as a Park ranger for the Area or working for some local council in the Riding area. Becuse like you I can not see it doing any thing with Horses, Why put Yorkshire if it was.

Hi Marylin It does sound like some sort of council officer, and it does sound more like it is referring to the Ridings of Yorkshire rather than horses. Which Riding was it in? This is the number for the East Yorkshire County records Office - 01482 392790. They might be able to help you. Jeanette x

Better late than never - I've just seen this thread. A riding officer could best be described as a Customs Officer on horseback. They were employed by Customs & Excise to combat smuggling which was rife in the C18 and C19. It was a very risky job - quite a lot were shot by the smugglers.
