Thanks everyone I have tried Christine's sites and will try Jane's now. Merry Monty, his name was Joseph Greenwood Bland, I did try the Times on line some time ago to no avail. He was a carpinter, he built some houses or invested in some, Southfield Lane, Bradford (we think) Dave PS revised dates - could be as late as 1930's

Even though Yorkshire is a long way from London his case may have made it into The Times newspaper!! If you can give me his name and type of business I can have a look for you, if you like.............. it's really a matter of luck whether he is in there or not. The Times printed lists of bankrupts daily, but if there was some interesting news to report, I think some of the court proceedings columns would get pushed out! You won't get much info from the paper, but you will get the DATE if it's in there....... Merry

Dave, Have you tried just putting his name into the search engine for the National Archives catalogue? If he owned a formal business at the time, they might have records relating to his bankruptcy. Good luck Jane

I had a look at this one; http://www.thisisbradford.*co.uk/bradford__district/archive/ but it only goes back to 1998, which isn't very much use in historical terms - or not yet, anyway. http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html is a possibility - a growing newspaper archive online. http://www.gazettes-online.*co.uk/ might be a possibility for the notices. I'll try to remember to come back again if I think of anything more. Christine

As it's a status with legal implications, I should have thought there would have to be court records and, perhaps, newspaper notices. Christine
