Geoff Thats the way I do it, I save the images to my desktop most of mine are Ancestry by the way. They all will open with Windows Picture & Fax viewer (one of the symbols at the bottom normally second from right) this opens it in a new window. There is a selection of colours down the bottom press for white, with the can on large. If this does not work very well, sometimes it misses bits you can cut the images with the square on the left column. And don't worry if you make a mistake if you press to X out you dont habe to save your work, or you can undo a small era by pressing edit on the top of the screen. It can take a bit of time but its worth it. Pat x

If you are using some sort of editing program it is usually very easy to 1) trim the image to minimise the black surround 2) use "colour change" or "colour fill" to change the surplus black bits to white.

You can also save all images to CD or Disk, then you have all records in one place. I do this and keep a log of what is on each CD with the year and surnames.

The piece number is usually shown at the end of the page. I trim the page down but keep that. I don't often print the page just save the image and attach to the source in my family tree programe. I try to put the date or piece number in the file name. Martin

Alternatively, do all your printing at work, saves a fortune!

Pat, I was wondering if there was any way to do that as we've just bought yet another black cartridge! Can you do this with Ancestry census images? Thanks, Mandy :)

And to save a lot of ink change the surround from black to white, you can do this in picture it, if you make a mistake x out of it saying not to save changes and start again, must have saved me a cartridge of black ink already. Pat x

When printing census images, alway write the year of census on the printout, because the year is not on the image.
