Hi all

I'm very much a newbie at this, so sorry if i ask stupid questions.

I don't have much information on my relatives and my only living relative is my Mum and she's the one thats passed the info on.

Anyway all i have is my grandparents DOB's, Marriage Date, etc. I have their parents names although on my grandmothers side there is some confusion. Would it be worth me trying to trace my relatives or am i fighting a losing battle?

Any advice would be much appreiciated.

Hi Paula, welcome to a VERY addictive hobby! I have been at it 13 years and still addicted.

With the information you have, it is a very good starting point, what you need to do is find the birth and marriage references for what you have, then order the certificates (assuming it is england/wales)

If you would like to post a few details, I am sure some-one will gladly assist you on your way.

Once you get back to 1901 we can start looking at census details etc to take things further.

I have brought a thread I wrote about finding certificate references to the top of the board, have a read, it will help you on your way, you may even be able to find the references on FreeBMD depending on the dates.

Yes, it can be done............start with your grandparents, and work backwards.......systematically.

Don't guess at possible links.....check them out.....you'll save yourself a lot of time in the long run.

Thanks so much for your replies. I have my grandads sisters birth certificate. I've managed to track down the references for my grandparents marriage certificate and also my grandmothers birth certificate as well.

The reference page numbers were very smudged but i've narrowed them down to a possible three pages.

My Grandmother was born 23 November 1916 and was called Florence Jones, i've narrowed that down to District-Wrexham, 11b, Page 376, or 378.

My Grandad was born 23 Jan 1917, District-Holywell, 11b, Page 281, 381, 201 or 301.

I must admit it is addictive, my Mum started out wanting to trace it but she works with pc's all day so i agreed to help out.

Cannot see Florence born Wrexham 1916.

11b 738 is the only Florence Dec qtr 1916 Wrexham. Mothers maiden name Reynolds. Is this the one you were looking at?

Of course it can be done,I didnt know my maternal or paternal grans maiden names but did know my family and my grandparentsteven tho didnt know the respective maiden names , You take one step at a time .i got my parents marriage cert .that gave the Dads names i found the birth certs of Mum & Dad and then had both parents names.I was fortunate that my dad was born 1907 and mum born 1909 so I was able to find both sets of parents on the 1901 ,so just kept working backwards using Freebmd ,Family Search and then took subs to Ancestry, So Yes you only need to start with youself and the world of ancesters ,slowly sometimes,opens up to you.

When you have read the replies above you would have just had a very good introduction to genealogy. It's addictive, and if your not careful as said above you'll go off in the wrong direction. Save every piece of information you have, are given or come across so that you can always check and double check the facts.
The board is full of people who are always willing to offer help so if you need it, ask for it.

Trust me not to put my grandads name in, it's Vincent J Hughes, 26 Jan 1917,

Yep thats the Florence, thanks for working the number out for me. We know she was born in the area but thought it would be under the Holywell district but there were no entries for there.

Now my grans sister was called Lilly (we think) so that name would tie in eith the family for sure, Selena.

Think it's time to order some certificates now 8-)

Just to tell you how possible it is when I started a few years ago I didn't even know my grandparents names and thanks to the people on here and a bit of reaserchch work by me I am now back to 1730 on my gran's side of the family and 1821 on my grandfathers side, but as Reg said back everything up with certs don't guess.

Thanks so much, i've ordered a couple of certificates.

Also i've asked a family friend today if she could help and she thinks she remembers her grandparents saying that my great grandparents were Quakers from Haverfordwest or my great great grandparents, so thats a bit more for me to go on.

This is all very exciting!

Yep he did have sisters & brothers but not sure how many etc.

Hi Paula,

Just went onto www.familyrelatives.org, I think it is anyway! and put in surname with mmn and area and up come all children registered up to 1920. After 1920 you have to search each quarter of each year just as on ancestry.

Very time consuming but normally extremely worthwhile!
