Eldrick Report 29 Aug 2008 19:19

I have a large ornately framed photograph of the 'K' (Kensington) division Detective Department (CID) taken in 1902 as a retirement present for an officer.

It's about to go on ebay but I thought if anyone had any of the following names as rellys, I could send them a copy - or they could bid for it :-)

Most of the senior officers were involved in the Jack the Ripper investigations and Supt Cresswel Wells was the man who put Emily Pankhurst in jail, I believe. Anyway, spread the word by all means.

PC A. Leech PC G. Budge PC Gray
PS W. Cridland PS G Read PC J. McMullen
PS G. Burton PC T. Gale PC W. Elsam
PS G. Scrimshaw PC J. Marshall PS R.Norris
PS W. Brown PC R. Wedden PS A. Vanstone
PS L. Liddelow PS E. Bell C.I. E. West
D.I. G. Mellish PS W. Evstale PS G. Lambert PS E. Burdon Supt. Cresswell Wells

Oooo Eldrick I had to rush in on this one. Sadly none of those are mine, wrong division too, and wrong year...

I've been trying to find out why my 4xGt Grandad had to retire from the met in 1874 after 20 years service. Found a document in the archives giving his retirement details and a description which included heavy scarring over the left eye. Also have a newspaper article in which he was beaten during an arrest...

It would be great if you could find a relly of the above to take it on, what a treasure!

Hi Eldrick

I hope you do not mind me popping in. I wondered if I might have permission to tell my Daughter and Partner about this so that they may circulate it around the local constabulary. You never know family traditions may see a local bobby with ancestors from that day.

Yes please, the more people that know about it the merrier - it would be great to see it going to a relative.

Its about A3 size - but the frame is much bigger. its a professionaly taken pic.

The provenance is that I bought it at an auction in Northumberland about 2 years ago. The only connection I can think of with up here is that there used to be a deputy chief constable called Mellish who retired about 12 years ago....or more. But he won't answer letters, so tough.

Hmmm you don't have my imaginary grandfather in there so no good for me :-))

Nice thought though

Interesting item Eldrick, hope it finds a home with one of the relatives in the picture, or perhaps the Met themselves might like to purchase it

My Oh's grand father and g-grandfather were Metropolitan police, but sadly not amongst those. As a retired man, grandfather was called back into service because of need of extra police at a coronation, forget which one!
