for genealogy purposes?

What did it involve?

Did you find anything exciting?

To be honest Joy. I'm intrigued by it.

However, (and I know this sounds completely daft lol) I'm against DNA being analysed as I wonder whose hands it can get into with "1984" and "Big Brother" and all that. (you must think I'm completely loopy lol)

It doesn't mean I won't do it one day...just thinking carefully about it.

I wonder how much it costs.

I think it works out about £250 this was for all three types of tests
i was going to have it done after Xmas last year
but other things took over my life and i put it on hold
but maybe one day
as i need it to prove
my connection to another family in my home town

Is this on the female line Joy?

Isn't there something to do whether you're male or female? Males are tested for links with the fraternal side of the family and females for the maternal?

£250 is not cheap...not that I'd expect it to be. What do the tests reveal?

One of the tests has to be done on your nearest blood line male
but the other two you can have done on a female
the test links you to other people carrying the same or similar DNA

and to the regions of origins

IE daughters of Ursula etc

the £250 was on special offer with a family tree mag
so i guess its dearer now

I would love to have it done... I had all sorts of chromosomal tests done a few months ago, but they didn't go as far as this... I would have liked to know more about my origins way way back, before baptisms and suchlike.. that, for me, would be the ultimate ancestry discovery!!

Love

My husband had his done about 18 months ago. It was a half price special Christmas offer of £130 I think.

It doesn't link you as such to modern day people, but gives the name of the "clan" he belongs to (nothing to do with Scottish clans), and their pattern of migration over the years to reach the UK. i.e. they were Ethiopian 20,000 years ago, then migrated via Russia and Poland towards the West. One part of his group went Southwards to Spain and the other part continued West towards England. It does link you with other names that belong to your clan though. As it turns out it seems I am of the same clan as him as it includes a lot of my family names too.

It's easily done, they just send you the stuff in the post. I swept the thingy (a bit like a long cotton bud) around the insides of his cheeks, sealed it in the sterile bag, and sent it back to them. It takes quite a few weeks for the results though, but they sent his results all written in book form.

oooh that's interesting Dianne.

I wonder if they will know more when more people take the test.

I must admit it does sound fascinating. I agree Daff, it would be the ultimate discovery although I wouldn't mind a few family history discoveries closer to our time too ;)

Thanks Joy :) I've enjoyed our chats today.

I had mine and my Dad's done. My miachondrial DNA (women can only trace the female line) is from the African "mother" who gave birth to those who would later be Celts, afer migrating from Africa.

Dad's is a bit more complicated but is basically Northern European as well.

I have had mine tested by two companies.

Ancestry and Family Tree DNA

I recommend the 2nd as they have a bigger database with 6,000 surname projects. Also they test deeper to give you ancient origins with a higher resolution. When new breakthroughs are found one can have more tests to see if you share any DNA markers.
I did it first to break down walls, but am now into more ancient walls too!
Amazing really I go on the DNA forums and chat with people who you know shared the same grandfather 3,500 yrs ago.

Also
On my mum's line I am in H clan, or Helana. Which is not surprising as 40% of us are too.

On my Dad's I am R-U152 which is quite common here too, but genetically am closer to some Swiss / North Italians and Southern Germans than UK residants. Many would probably find this too though.
I now have a near match who is a 9th cousin to Sir Winston Churchill, no proof though as his line is father daughter father etc. My claim to fame though :-)

A downside to DNA testing is many 'affairs' have taken place and DNA doesn't lie! I am fortunate that my descendants were faithful/survived etc and I have matches back 12-15 generations. Finding the 'inbetweeners' is the tricky bit. I meet a lot of DNA tested who hit brick walls with DNA too as their gt grandfather came from a different named 'source' as it were!
If there have been 'strays' they would match other surnames within recent times. If your results come back as 67/67 with another participant would indicate within 300 yrs. That is where the paper trail comes in and some geographical detective work!
