Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 17 Aug 2009 18:58

I have an old Ford Sierra Ghia, 74,000+ on the clock, three owners, 22 yrs old and was running until last August, when it was not used due to o.h.'s health problems and temporary loss of licence. I sorned it in November when the tax was due. It's an automatic and scruffy but ran well, had a newish battery and tyres and had been mot'd in the April 08 so only a couple of months or so running after that before it was left on the drive. O.h. has charged battery a few times and run it and it sounds ok, obviously tyres will need pumping etc and there may be mice nesting in the wheel arches lol, only kidding, I hope.

My son's friend says he might like to buy it, does anyone have any idea how much I could ask for it? This lad likes doing up old cars. I would like to get as much as I can for it and maybe I can pick up something else later on, I never drove the car as didn't like it being automatic, it was big too compared to the Fiesta I like driving. We only got it in a hurry cos the other Sierra which I could drive at a push, manual one, died suddenly and at that time o.h. didn't own a bike. Since his health problems when he had to get a bike to get to work, we have managed with one car, it's only occasionally a nuisance, like today when he took car as he fell and hurt his knee at the weekend, and it turned out to be too stiff to cycle, he came back after a couple of streets and got the car instead to get to work, leaving me stuck!

Well 'Auto Trader' have a 21 year old Ghia on offer at £750. It is worth having a look at trade sites to see what they are asking for then comparing the vehicles, ie body condition, vehicle history, mileage, extras such as electic mirrors etc before deciding on a price.

I suggest you enter it for sale on ebay
Who knows you might only get £200 because of its age.

Conversely you might get £2000 or more as some might see it as a collectors item.

You can always put a reserve on so thay it cannot sell for less than say £500

Thanks for the advice, I did look at one or two sites and they seem to be quite popular, or several to sell, it would need some work to make it look good but I hate to let it go for less than it's worth cos I need the cash lol Can't afford to use it for a scrappage deal as I haven't the money to get a new motor altho it would be lovely. The Fiesta was only 2 yrs old when we got it and it's a very nippy little car, I love it altho it is now 8 yrs old, doesn't time fly? It's o.h.s car tho not mine so unless he signs it over to me as a Christmas pressie or something, lol......

Liz hi.
You don't say if its got a MOT on it, a lot of people won't buy a car without one as they donot know how much its going to cost to get it on the road. Also you say its a sierra ghia, which l understand are not worth that much now but if its a sierra cosworth, they usually fetch more money.
Why don't you a phone a local dealer up and say your thinking of buying a new car and would like to know how much they think you would get for your car, l did this and got a rough idea what my car was worth, mind you we always think our cars are worth more than we're offered, lol.
Hope l've been of a bit of help !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Mummo, I haven't had it mot'd till we decided what we wanted to do with it, it was only done two weeks before it was taken off the road so shouldn't cost a lot to go through again. I just had occasion to speak to the mechanic who looks after both cars as the Fiesta has to go in next week to have a niggling noise checked out and the aircon done, so I asked him what he thought and he said Scrap value would be about £50 and if someone wanted to do it up, they would probably pay between £50 and £100 so I will have a serious think about whether to get rid or not. If o.h. decided later on he wanted a second car but not to pay a lot, it would be hard to find something he could be sure wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg later on, with this car we know it as we have had it about 4 years now and know what's been done and it's limitations etc.

Why not put it for sale. Spares or repair. but at that age with no MOT.don,t expect a great deal.£50----£100.about the best, but spares etc could get more .**M**.

Liz, have you realised that in 3 years time you can run it on the road without taxing it ?

Vehicles first registered over 25 years ago are exempt from the Road Tax.

It would be a cheap car to use as a runabout if you got it going.

GRMarilyn

GRMarilyn Report 19 Aug 2009 16:07

Bernie,

Its not a rolling 25 year exemption. It only applies to vehicles manufactured (not registered) prior to the 1.1.73. and is classed as 'zero' tax with a tax disc being issued and displayed.

I think you will find that correct........

I stand corrected. Not a lot of people know that. (Well I didn't).

i was hanging on to my old Avenger for that reason then they moved the goalposts, it was registered in I think 1975, it's rotting away under a mountain of stuff in my garage but another friend of my son's is interested in that too and I won't have the money to do anything with it now. I was so full of good intentions to have it done up at some point but then life got in the way....
I only put it away for a few months to save on tax, it was before the days of SORN I really loved that car tho, was my second Avenger and took me and my son around for the first ten years of his life.
