Just wondering how our ancestors got on without music as we have it today...whenever we want.

I know there was the Music Hall etc...but what about well before that and those who could not afford the opera etc......I wonder if they heard anything musical.....I personally don't know what I would do without music on tap....makes one think!

I think, in rural areas, travelling musicians used to come around periodically, so perhaps they just had to wait for that!

Other than that, people used to sing :))

A great great grandfather was down as a musician - a violin player - on a number of census returns. I would love to know where he played but I can't find any info.

Maybe he was a travelling entertainer Susan, or maybe he just played for the entertainment of his family and put it down as an occupation. Have you inherited any of his musical skill?

Alas no, Ann. I love listening to music and that is something my dad and brother also love. However I've never played an instrument. Perhaps he was a travelling musician. Sadly he died quite young.

My grandfather b. 1875 in Sussex came from a quite modest family, where there was certainly no extra money for musical treats and yet he really appreciated 'good music' and his children all had a love of things musical, with the 2 sons in particular developing a great love of music by the great classic composers.
I've often wondered how a shipwright had an opportunity to indulge and learn about such matters.

Living in the country in Australia, I grew up without much music. My dad used to sing to us, he had a beautiful voice, his mother sang to his siblings as well as did her mother. Mostly Irish songs and later on dad would sing what he had heard on the radio.

I love listening to music now.
