Just wondering how our ancestors got on without music as we have it today...whenever we want. |

I think, in rural areas, travelling musicians used to come around periodically, so perhaps they just had to wait for that! |

A great great grandfather was down as a musician - a violin player - on a number of census returns. I would love to know where he played but I can't find any info. |

Maybe he was a travelling entertainer Susan, or maybe he just played for the entertainment of his family and put it down as an occupation. Have you inherited any of his musical skill? |

Alas no, Ann. I love listening to music and that is something my dad and brother also love. However I've never played an instrument. Perhaps he was a travelling musician. Sadly he died quite young. |

My grandfather b. 1875 in Sussex came from a quite modest family, where there was certainly no extra money for musical treats and yet he really appreciated 'good music' and his children all had a love of things musical, with the 2 sons in particular developing a great love of music by the great classic composers. |

Living in the country in Australia, I grew up without much music. My dad used to sing to us, he had a beautiful voice, his mother sang to his siblings as well as did her mother. Mostly Irish songs and later on dad would sing what he had heard on the radio. |
