No Keith, though I live close to the confluence of the Nottingham,Erewash and Cromford Canal, and pass the basin on a regular basis and see the barges moored up there at the side of the pub. Also, my father has fitted out two of the barges there, in recent years. Have always quite fancied this kind of holiday, but it is a bit expensive I understand. And, I am led to belief, you have to moor up at alot of pubs on the way..

Yes.

Pit falls:-

danger of falling in the canal!
the locks - not always easy plus fear of scraping boat.
It's easier if there are more than 2 of you but if there are 10 then the kitchen is a bit small and cooking breakfast is a right pain!
driving the thing in the rain is a nuisance.

Good points:-
the singing - if there are 10 you make a lot of noise!!
the peace and quiet (well apart from the engine noise but you sort of drown that out)
they're cosy.
the swans - one of them came right up to the barge one morning and was drinking water out of my water bottle! truly amazing.
heron spotting - that's fabulous too.
some great pubs.

Our trip was around the Rugby area so can't speak for everywhere else.

Hi Keith

If you enyoy fishing take a fishing rod with you

Pit fulls

Trying to park the thing (sorry moore) but after a couple of goes it gets better. and also gives the other people a laugh so you make somebody else's day.

Best bit

One long pub crawl we would get to the next pub and park up for the night

Its a fabulous holiday if you want to see the real countryside.

But beware of called the vessel a barge in front of people who live on them - they are called Narrow Boats.
