I have been e-mailed that some ' marriage certificates', and I say that loosly, have been posted to me from a Records Office, to do with rellies from the 1700's. I can hardly contain myself. I plan to tether up the dog, so that she does not beat me to him, the postie that is, and that is indoors, and I am only joking about tethering her up, but I am sure you all know what I mean. I will have to have a good drop of Brandy tonight to keep me calm. |

They have arrived. They are copies of entries of two marriages taken from a michrofiche, one in 1739 and one in 1750. So, big question now is, what is the difference in a marriage by banns and a marriage by licence. Please somebody answer me this question. |

Julia - that is great to get those 'certificates'. I didn't think it possible to get anything prior to 1837. Is this a general thing, or just from one particular place? and if it's possible, how do we go about applying for them? |

Thank you SomersetGirl for the information. I think in this case it may have been to do with social standing, as the groom was a landowner at the time, 1750. Unless there was a still birth, the bride was not pregnant, as the first child was not born until Sept 1751. Mind you the groom, my 6th x Gt.Grandad, died the year after, and the bride remarried soon after that. They must have been very lusty in those days, as I know he was married at least once, before 1750, and maybe twice, as he had a daughter old enough to be married in 1739 |
