One of my ancestors has his given (Christian) name recorded on two different censuses as Abbt.

Can anyone shed any light on what this name might be? I wondered if it could be shorthand for Arbuthnot.

thanks

Roy

What census have you found him on - I can have a look at the original image, what is his surname. Have you found his marriage/birth?

Matching up one 'Abbt' on census with birth records he is actually Albert so might be worth checking that out.

well it is a strange one when i googled it,one explanation i got is that it is a acronym, ABBT= Akebono Basho Benihanna Takanahanna.....Do's it make any sense to you?
A more down to earth guess is Abbot.
Good luck.you never know what our ancestors got up to!

Liz - He's on 1891 census RG12/2365 Staffordshire > Harborne > District 33 > Page 29 as Abbt. B. Taylor.
And I'll swear I found him on the 1901 census but I can't find the reference.

Rambling Rose - Albert seems a possibility - there are several other Alberts dotted around the tree

As for Akebono .....

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

best regards

It definately looks like Abbt. B. Taylor - even on the original image. I can't find the family in l90l.

June

Many many thanks for finding that information. I've never had a great deal of success with the BMD records but it looks as though you've hit the right nail solidly on the head.

Once again - thank you
