My friend's son did it last year. Don't know what it cost but he did all the paperwork online. No court involved. |

Basically, a Deed Poll is simply a document that you sign saying that you wish to be known by a different name. It is neither registered nor is there any court involvement. |

In the late 60's I changed my surname without anything more than writing to the tax office and other official bodies, and my bank etc, just saying from that date I wanted to be known as such and such. Later on I changed it back when the relationship fell apart, there wasn't a marriage involved, I never made things like that legal lol It was very straightforward then but probably more difficult now in view of fraud and such. |

If you you just write to official bodies explaining that you wish to be 'known by' another name they will note their records and correspond with you under the new name. If you have made an official change by deed poll, they will ask to see the document for verification. |

I changed my surname in 1999 through the solicitor. It cost £42.00. |

When I worked I dealt with these things and they were quite straightforward usually. The only sort of delays were usually because people were writing from an address not on the records because they hadn't bothered to notify a change and we had to make sure we had the right person. If you send a document in, you will get an acknowledgment as they will return it to you. To be sure, the easy way is to ask them to confirm in writing that they have made the change. |
