Basically, a Deed Poll is simply a document that you sign saying that you wish to be known by a different name. It is neither registered nor is there any court involvement.

There are companies that will provide you with the appropriate document and ensure you follow the correct procedure (for a modest fee, of course)

Just Google 'Deed Poll' for more information.

In the late 60's I changed my surname without anything more than writing to the tax office and other official bodies, and my bank etc, just saying from that date I wanted to be known as such and such. Later on I changed it back when the relationship fell apart, there wasn't a marriage involved, I never made things like that legal lol It was very straightforward then but probably more difficult now in view of fraud and such.

I had to remember to put that down when I applied for my pension as I was working full time and didn't want to miss anything I was entitled to.

If you you just write to official bodies explaining that you wish to be 'known by' another name they will note their records and correspond with you under the new name. If you have made an official change by deed poll, they will ask to see the document for verification.

Remember to notify everyone though, as there will be problems tracing you if you just use a different name they are not aware of.

I changed my surname in 1999 through the solicitor. It cost £42.00.

The passport office must get the original document signed by the solicitor, but everyone else can use a photocopy of it. The solicitor will supply a number of copies.

The worst bit is remembering absolutely everybody who needs to be told, from officialdom right down to changing your library ticket, so get a pen and paper out and make a (very long) list.

Hope this helps.

When I worked I dealt with these things and they were quite straightforward usually. The only sort of delays were usually because people were writing from an address not on the records because they hadn't bothered to notify a change and we had to make sure we had the right person. If you send a document in, you will get an acknowledgment as they will return it to you. To be sure, the easy way is to ask them to confirm in writing that they have made the change.
