I have just started to trace my mothers family tree.
My mothers name was Norma Fuller nee hargreaves ( 12\4\41) her mother ( My grandmother)was JESSIE ELLAM CARTER born 18\7\1902 in Manchester. She married in 1925 to JACOB GOLDSTONE. they had two children sidney and Elsie. I don't know how long they where married but my Grandmother Jessie left Jacob and ran off with my Grandfather ( NORMAN HARGREAVES) Jessie and Norman never married. They had my mother in 1941 and their address then was BACK COKE street. Manchester.
I know that Jessie's father was called Joseph Carter and he was a mail van driver. Her mother was called Caroline.( nee dickinson)
I have been told that Norman left a wife and several children.
It must have been very difficult for everyone in involved.
I also know that Jacob Goldstone died in 1983.
Norman Hargreaves parents where john
and Alice Ann ( nee Thompson ). John was a water inspector
I would really like to hear from anyone who has any information about any names mentioned. My mum had just started to trace her family history before she died in 2004. She wanted me to carry on.
i have made a good start but am stuck on the 1981 censors where it all goes to pot and can't seem to make anyone up! any tips?
Thank you

Jaqueline
Maybe you need to put this on either the records board or the Tips board. You need to list clearly, the names and place and dates of birth you know, plus dates and places of marriage that you know List it all clearly, then say what it is you actually need help in finding. When you say you are stuck with the 1981 censor, do you mean the 1881 census?

With family history, you need to start with yourself and work back probably collecting birth, marriage and death certificates on the way as proof.

Good luck

I've had a quick look on the 1901 but can't see Joseph and Caroline.

Really need more info from Jacqueline.

wow... it was just great to get a reply! thank you. Yes i did mean the 1881 censors.. wrote this after spending a day seraching through! very tired!
i will take your advice and put on the other boards with more detail about each surname.I did find them all on the 1911 censor... Jessie was born in 1902. I think that Jospeh and Caroline married sometime in 1902 too! i i did spend a long time searcing for them both on the 1901 as i assumed they were not living together and although i did find some names that matched nothing else seemed to.
I have my grandmother marriage cert so def know that her father was Joseph and he was then in 1925 a mail van driver. I also have my grandmothers/grandfathers death cert so know there d.o.b are correct.
My auntie elsie who is living told me the name caroline and her maiden name was dickinson.
I managed to find out quite a bit from 1901 and 1911 censors about my granddad norman father John Hargreaves and what would appear to be his second wife Alice ann (nee Thompson) those names are correct as i have my gandfathers birth cert.
born 1849 married in 1902( was widowed before with three children, eliza ann and emily H and joseph L ) then with alice went on to have 4 boys. john 1905 thomas redman 1907 william 1908 and my granddad Norman 1910. John hargreaves was 62 when he had my granddad and a water meter inspector.
I then looked at 1881 censors ( assumed john was on his own with three children or not yet widowed) and also for alice thompson as i know they did not marry till around 1902 but kept on coming up blank! or none of it seemed to make sense?
on 1911 censors John hargreaves place of birth was BACUP lancashire.
All of my mums side of family are from manchester area.

am i making too many assumptions?

thank you for your reply... i will spend a bit of time putting right info on the right boards and hope it leads somewhere.

So to set it out a bit more clearly then:

Jessie CARTER’S father was called Joseph CARTER and he was a mail van driver. Her mother was called Caroline.( nee DICKINSON)

JESSIE ELLAM CARTER born 18\7\1902 in Manchester. She married in 1925 to JACOB GOLDSTONE. they had two children Sidney and Elsie. (Have marriage cert)
. I think that Joseph and Caroline married sometime in 1902 too. Jacob GOLDSTONE died in 1983.

Norman HARGREAVES parents were John HARGREAVES and Alice Ann ( nee THOMPSON). John was a water inspector born 1849 married in 1902( was widowed before with three children, Eliza Ann and Emily H and Joseph L ) then with Alice went on to have 4 boys. John 1905 Thomas Redman 1907 William 1908 and my granddad Norman 1910. John HARGREAVES was 62 when he had my granddad and a water meter inspector

Grandmother Jessie left Jacob and ran off with my Grandfather ( NORMAN HARGREAVES) Jessie and Norman never married. They had my mother in 1941 and their address then was BACK COKE street. Manchester.

So you have your Grandparents Norman HARGREAVES and Jessie ELLAM CARTER (1902 Manchester)

Great Grandparents John HARGREAVES (1849) and Alice THOMPSON and Joseph CARTER and Caroline DICKENSON
