"Women in same-sex relationships can now register both their names on the birth certificate of a child conceived as a result of fertility treatment."

OMG, can you imagine the brick wall that would cause? How many incorrect trees would be growing out of something like that?

Marilyn a sperm donor can also be named so I don't know if this means that a child can have 3 parents on a birth cert

I have to say I dont agree with that, surely the original birth certificate should have the birth mother and nothing more.(if by donor)
If later the other partner wants to adopt then that would be a different story.

You have really brought up something for us to think about! I was under the impression that only the biological father's name can be on the certificate - and these days, the father has to sign his permission for this to be shown, if not married to the mother. Otherwise, the space for 'father' is left blank.

I know that IVF clinics keep strict records, but I do wonder about the certificates where the sperm was donated by a stranger? What happens there?

As for same-sex couples who have babies - I wonder how they get on if only the biological parent is named?
Can anyone enlighten me?

That's the point Claire is making Berona.

In a same sex relationship, BOTH women can now be named on the birth cert. That is, the mother and her partner.

Sperm donors, as far as I am aware, are anonymous here...so the chance of a descendent finding out their true ancestry is about as likely as the dodo turning up somewhere.

I heard this on the radio this morning. Need to read more about it but not impressed. Birth certificates should tell the truth, simple as that - not just for the legal aspect but for the sake of the child. Everyone should have the right of knowing who their biological parents were.

Anonymous sperm donation ended in Britain about four years ago and this ruling seems a step backwards to me. I don't see why someone who is co parenting with a biological parent can't adopt the child(ren).

i stand corrected. I didn't realise anonymous sperm donations had stopped.

Is that a good thing? I don't know.

Maurice, whatever happens there has to be sperm and an egg:) I don't give a toss whether a child has one mother and one father or six mothers and no fathers - doesn't matter as long as a child is loved and nurtured. The only important thing is the child and every child should have, wherever possible, the opportunity of knowing who their biological parents identity. A law that diminishes this right just to cater to the perceived needs of those doing the parenting is wrong.

What happens in surrogate pregnancies. Is it the name of the woman who gives birth that goes on the cert or the name of the woman who will be known as the mother???
