Fuel duty to rise from midnight

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

A two pence rise in fuel duty will come into effect from midnight, the third increase in nine months.

The government says the extra duty is needed to help fund public investment.

They have to put it on it's the law - I think they are taking the hit themselves until the 6th.

2p per litre =approx 9p nearly 2 shillings rise, per gallon in one go!! on a 10 gallon tank thats £1 ..extra...plus the seasonal rises......it was 105.9 already in our tesco extra at hampton!! dunno if thats' including gordon's 2p.......
doesnt sound much does it? 2p?
decimalisation was aboon to the likes of the treasury they would never have dared to increase petrol by the REAL amount in GALLONS.........2/-

public investment??

*****lies!!!*****

its to replace the loss of the tobacco revenue, more like!!
and the fact that more and more people are on the dole/ benefits, due to the recession

Would happen just as we are about to go away on holiday probably by car so it will add to the holiday costs.
And o.h. still has problems with his knee so won't be biking again yet!

strange, innit? how both sainsbury's AND tesco run the same promotion at the same time the price goes up/////// spend £50 in the shop and get a voucher for 5p /litre off petrol,

STILL makes it more than £1 per litre

Be fair, Bob, Tesco's run this offer frequently. We often make use of it.

Jean, Yes I am aware, I use it myself,
what the comment was aimed at was............the fact that it coincided this time with the price increase, I am also of the belief that the two companies are hardly ever in step with each other........

It will push the inflation rate up as virtually all goods get to the shops by road (no railway line down our high street).

Interestingly, the revenue from Tobacco tax remains just about constant year on year and has done for the past decade. That's why each year it rises by a rather odd amount - it is calculated to exactly make up for the loss due to reduced consumption.

Normally when the cost of something goes up, consumption goes down. Petrol and fuel is one of those commodities where this does not apply in the same way , so an increase in tax is guaranteed to bring in extra revenue. Yes, there may be a few who give up their Sunday drive, but the effect is insignificant. Gordon Brown has been taking advantage of this ever since he first became Chancellor,

This government has a death wish, intent on destroying itself. For the past year it has done nothing but back the wrong horse.

Refusing rights to the Ghurkas despite these wonderful men fighting and dying for our country yet at the same time allowing untold numbers of eastern Europeans to swell our numbers.

Attempting to cut the benefits paid to limbless soldiers.

Allowing utility companies to increase prices by 10% a year but limiting wages.

Despite spending trillions on baling out incompetent bankers, allowing them to pay themselves huge bonuses.

And now - putting petrol and diesel up despite the recesssion which will make more and more British Haulage firms unable to compete against the ever increasing foreign hauliers who pay nothing in fuel tax or road tax.

But the biggest self administered wound it has done is to bring back the creep Mandy for a third time and make him a Lord. Did you know that 25% of the cabinet is UNELECTED? Thats right, a quarter of it. 28 members and 7 are in the House of Lords.

I love this country but I am sorry to say it is going downhill.

BrianW

BrianW Report 3 Sep 2009 10:37

It would make more sense to cut the duty on diesel to the French level.

This would have two effects:
1. To enable our hauliers to compete on level terms with foreign firms
2. To encourage the switch to diesel cars and vans which are more fuel efficient and therefore reduce CO2 emissions, thus helping achieve their target for cuts in greenhouse gases.

Thats too simple for our lot Brian.

Well this rise actually did me a favour cos one of my arguments against going on holiday in this country and driving to Kent or Sussex, sightseeing and then driving home, was the added increase in petrol costs as well as the price of the apartment.

It worked cos I managed to persuade o.h. it was just as cheap to go abroad lol and now we are looking forward to two weeks in Corfu later this month lol
