iligitamate children

my great grand father was illigitamate but was taken in by a couple then took the husband of the couple sur name when getting married ware can i go or get info to see if this couple addoped him after birth have the name of his birth mother regarss tom

When are you talking about? Adoption as we see it today didn't become legalised until 1927.

Just to update, apparently this took place in Scotland.

I've got a similar situation with my grandmother: I believe that her parents died and she was bought up by an aunt, taking their surname.

There is no paperwork to support that other than a birth certificate obtained when she was 65 (and luckily passed down to me) and the fact that her place of birth was the address of the adopters.
