As far as I am aware, IF the occasion arises that you want to send your family tree contents to a third person, who may not be using the SAME family tree program, as you.
A GEDCOM is a program that electronically collects ALL the data from your particular family tree program,( OR the GENES one even,) and you can send this block of info, via email or other method ,cd, usb stick,to this third person,
as opposed to actually writing out, or printing your tree info, by hand......
the third persons program is capable of decoding this information, and making it understandable in its own particular format.........
is that any clearer?

hope that helps a little,

Bob

Thanks Bob. The thing is, all this supposes that I know what I am doing on a computer! Alas I am computer illiterate, and stuff takes me ages to understand :(

thats about right I think,
I have on my desktop a gedcom of MY FTM tree,
I sent a copy of this Gedcom to me bruvver!!
who successfuly transferred it to his tree program.......

I just tried double clicking on it as suggested, and it opened up my FTM, a dropdown box then offered me the title of this gedcom and asking me( presumably because the tree already exists, in my ftm) for a NEW name for the gedcom,
so I guess thats about it.....Good luck

Bob
