I cannot find my Garrard ancestors in the 1851 census. They are Frederick born 1815 in Ipswich, Mary Ann born 1820 in Colchester, and their children-Frederick born 1841,Mary Ann 1844 in Cochester and Esther born 1848 in Ipswich. I have tried several sites in case of transcribing errors but no luck there either. Debtors prison, workhouse maybe?

Do you know for sure that any or all of them were still alive then?

I had this problem with one of my family in the 1901 census.I knew where they lived but could not bring them up on the census.Eventually I maaged to do it by entering the name of the baby.
