Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 11 Sep 2009 22:31

OH and I went to see Joan today. All day visit cos we left Kent at 10am and arrived in Harefield Middlesex at 12.40pm . we went for some lunch at a local Pub cos visiting doesnt start till 2pm.
Joan had been transferred to a bed in the ward that was isolated from others cos the antibiotics are causing diarrhoea and they dont want cross infections,
She went to surgery on Tuesday to have the packing taken out of her chest from the abscess and a smaller drain put in.It still draining bloody fluid(sorry for explicit description) The feeding tube through her nose has been taken out and another put into her stomach. .She had a barium X Ray yesterday to see her swallow reflex. she can sip water but still nil by mouth on food,She did have a bladder catheter inserted last Tuesday but this has been taken out now.
She was looking so much better from when we saw her last Tuesday.apparently the abcess was in her chest cavity and was near her heart and was growing so big it was pressing on her lungs and trachea and against her thoracic tube hence why she wasnt able to swallow.
She has been up and taken some steps but naturally felt very week on her feet.
They have no idea why this abcess formed, she was a mild smoker some 6-9 ciggies a day But they dont think smoking was the cause. She has no intention of smoking again when she gets home !
It was well worth our visit to see her looking so much better even though took us 2hrs 40mins to get there and 3+hrs to get home . The M25 traffic is horrendous!!

I am so glad you found Joan looking better when you visited, and altho a stressful journey, must have been so worthwhile, for you to ease your worries and to help cheer up Joan too.

I hope she continues to make good progress and will stick to her resolve never to smoke again once she gets home.

Best of luck to her
