A retired naval officer has written to the Queen and prime minister suggesting a town in Wiltshire be renamed "Royal Wootton Bassett".

Bill Thomas, from Hampshire, said the town's tradition of paying respect to soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq should be officially recognised.

Mr Thomas said: "They're doing a fantastic job and should be rewarded."

Hi Brian, I think that would be a lovely tribute to the people of Wootton Bassett and in a way, to the servicemen and women who have links to the area or who are saluted through the streets on their last journeys.

I was born in Wootton Bassett but now live in the Midlands. I am so proud of the people of my hometown. When the bell of St Bart's tolls the whole town comes to a standstill in silent tribute to the young men and women who have lost their lives. "Royal Wootton Bassett" what I wonderful tribute that would be.

I think that is a wonderful idea, I hope that the Queen grants it, it would be a fitting tribute to the town and its people.

I expect when Lyneham closes in 2012 the cortege won't pass through Town.
