Skin grafts? Was it that bad? poor dog.

From my understanding, the dog was reported missing last night, so he has been in that state.

I got a phone call saying the owner of the dog has been forced to sign the dog to the vets for regular visits for skin grafts and treatment. If they don't comply, the dog will be taken from them, treated and re-homed.

So, a happy end. :)

My cats chipped....even though she is a house cat. cost about £17, 4 yr ago.

I have a cat who is 18, on medication for thyroid, cant have more tablets as they will affect his kidneys. He is so boney I feel a bit ashamed when anyone new sees him, but we are known here for being cat mad so my neighbours realise we have done all we can. He has been'mousing' in the garden this week, even though there are none obvious to catch, but he enjoys the life he has.

My friend found a young cat - bleeding mouth, half starved and frantic.
She took it to the vet who noticed a few teeth were missing and it had hit it's mouth. The vet looked for a microchip - it had one - and having given it antibiotics, let my friend take him the vet said it was a boy) home until the owners could be found.
Friend kept the cat in until it's mouth had healed - but it still refused to go out!
After 3 weeks - yes that's 3 weeks - the owner was found - over 10 miles away.
Apparently the cat was from a rescue centre. It was one of two she'd picked up a week before my friend found it. It had bad teeth, which had been removed the day it went missing. The woman had got the cat home, where it had gone into a panic and run into the patio door (with that and the tooth removal - hence the bloody mouth - and the operation meant he'd been starved for 8 hours)
The cat was agarophobic - and never went out. the woman was so relieved the cat (which turned out to be a 'she' ) was in good hands, she asked my friend if she would keep her - as she was obviously happier with her.

Obviously vets (unable to determine the sex) microchips and initial presumptions aren't infallible!!

I lost a microchipped (and fortunately spayed) cat too - last seen living on the allottments - much fussed over (and fed) by the allottment holders. She knows where we are - and many have tried to take her home - but she prefers life out there!

I have never seen so many sweeping assumptions in such a short space of time!

Chips are great. Superb concept and both of my dogs are chipped. They are not a magic wand though, so lets be clear. They will assist in re-uniting a dog with its owner - but only when someone intervenes and take the dog to a vet or other centre where the chip can be read. And, as the posters read "Good News".....

But who knows what happens in the interim. I know - let's guess and speculate!

The RSPCA are highly unlikely to re-unite a dog with an owner if they believe a dog will be at risk. However, there is a legal question of ownership here and before making sweeping statements there is a question of fact. Please don't get me wrong, I love animals and will never wittingly harm even a wasp, but that doesn't give us any rights to act outside of the law.

And Rox - your comments to Muffy (and I quote):

I would reitterate what other people have said - Untill we know the FULL facts I wouldn't want to pass judgement.

I had a cat that was microchipped, She dissapeared one day and was never seen again. Beautiful little thingshe was - Pure white. I was devestated - So micro chipping is certainly not fool proof.

My moggie found a poor, pathetic bundle of matted and filthy feline fur a couple of years ago, hidden under one of our shrubs... took me ages to coax it in... what a dreadful state... took him to RSPCA, who checked his chip.... they were full, so I took him back with me.... I could see that he was a long haired, white originally, so bought some special talc on the way home, some brushes and little treats and popped him into my vet as his eyes were weeping... he was starving, so I fed him a little bit at a time... spent hours brushing him... he turned out to be a magnificent silver tipped chinchilla.

Now... although he was chipped... it took the chipping company another 5 days to be contactable... they just weren't responding!

He had escaped while moving into his new home around the corner from me....... but what if I wasn't caring, and knew what I was doing? That cat could have been picked up by anyone! Happy ending.... reunited with his frantic owner.... he had been missing for weeks.... and he was reported as such to all the main agencies straight away.... but still wasn't entered on their databases!

He sometimes pops around for a visit... I phone his owner to let her know, and she comes and collects him, lol

Oh.... I rambled a bit there.... my point being that this animal looked neglected, half starved and dreadful....... but he was a much loved and well cared for cat until he ran away!! It's not good to make assumptions.... and I would never trust a vet who maligned another owner without being in possession of more facts.

Chips work better than nothing, I have known of several cases where animals would not have been reunited with their owners if they had not had chips.
but..I take your point about the pedigree issue, Ive actually seen cases where the chip has been cut out too,so the animal could not be traced, just awful!
usually the animals are used for fighting so staffies and other fighting breeds are targets!

Not always so with a pedigree, there are some unsavoury types about Rox, we shouldn't assume that someone will find an escaped pedigree dog on the street and actually hand it in. For the details on the chip to be found, it would have to be handed in wouldn't it.

Your tone suggested to me that you were questioning Muffy's ability to look after her animals, as it came across as very sarcastic. If I was mistaken then I apologise

I simply asked if her dog was chipped? she stated that she took the colar off her dog and it happened to get out and was worried about getting the animal back.
I asked if her dog was chipped because if a
dog is chipped it makes it simple for dog and owner to be reunited! Simple!

That's exactly what I was trying to say earlier Rose, none of us has the full facts, not even Elaine, and it would be wrong of us to make any assumptions without them.

The dog may well be on medication for all we know...........the vet wouldn't know by looking at the dog what if any medication was being given would he?

Having a"completely empty stomach"..........again according to the vet doesn't mean the owners had neglected the dog either.

When sweeping statements and accusations are made without all the facts being known...........I find it irritating.

before this gets too heated... none of us actually know the FACTS of this case...

There are any number of reasons why the RSPCA might have returned the dog to its owner ...it may only have been reported as missing to that vet shortly before...but reported as missing weeks ago to the police for example...

If it were in that bad a condition as you describe I doubt whether the vet if they were at all decent would have released it and whilst there might not have been traces of medication in its system that doesn't nec' mean no treatment was being given previously... my neighbours dog for eg had a skin condition and would bite it raw...but the vet other than saying give medicated baths and ointment would not prescribe till the results of tests were in.

And do we know the owners actually HAVE the dog back? the vet might have released it to them but the RSPCA might then have taken it later... when it was on home territory,

none of us know exactly?

I do tend to think what I like Rox......it's a habit of mine :0)

And yes both of my dogs are microchipped......thanks for your concern.

But did you see THAT one Rox? No, so unless you're the vet that dealt with it, there isn't really anything that you can say is there.


PS, Please don't bring Muffy's ability to look after her animals into question, nobody could look after any of her animals better than she does.

That sort of attitude would over night increase the amount of dogs in animal welfare centres.....and is, in my opinion a complete over reaction.

P.S All Dogs should be chipped,it should be law! no ifs or buts about it!
