I don't have children with ASDs Dawn, but I understand that there can be a heritable factor. Do you feel that you were treated differently? |

Dawn not sure we spoke before my eldest is 15 he has classic autism and he was diagnosed when he was 7 a week later my father was also diagnosed with the same type of autism I knew from birth my son was having difficulties so I did my own research and saw behavioural not only in my son and father but my brother, grandmother and my 3 nephews (who have all since been diagnosed 1 with classic autism and 2 with aspersgers and ADHD) when my son was diagonosed we worked in partnership with his school and at the time there were 178 types of autism on the spectrum. Soon asfter the diagnosis a neice and a cousins child displayed signs of being on the spectrum both are yet to be diagnosed as you know the process can take several years. My youngest daughter also from birth we were able to obswerve behavioural patterns ~ some more extreme than my son, when she was two I was working alongside the school SENCO and we were prepaing for the arrival with patterns similar to my daughter it prompted us both to get the ball rolling within 6 months she had been diagnosed she has complex needs, ADHD, elect mutism and GDD she is not autistic but was found to be on the spectrum as some traits she displayed could be deemed by some as austism immidiatly the offered a high dose of retilin for our 2 year old daughter for life we refused and decided to control her ADHD by cutting certain foods out of her diet for both of them we were told "they will never do this or that" don't listen to so-called experts you know your own children like no-one else these kids are able to achieve far more than they are given credit for we have broken down so many barriers with both of ours. My son is happily in the middle of GSCE's in mainstream with the potential of gaining 11-13 grades and my daughter has just begun a mainstream high school with very little support ~ don't give up they are worth it and they will get the help they need to make them happy and independent x |

Hi Dawn Laddo sound very much like my Mark did a while back if he enjoys art therapy fight to get it back, encourage him to go to sessions away from home and family this was a major issue for Mark but it worked over time Mark used to be very unsettled at night and experience night terrors every night this was because he wasn't happy at school maybe the two are linked with Laddo also Mark gets 27 1/2 hours support each week at school and uses 25 of it he is becoming more and more independent its definatly worth you asking for extra support at school |
