Dancing Dee

Thanks for the contribution. When I was very young we lived in the east End of London, our road consisted of Catholic and Jewish people who all got on very well. Now if a person was very poorly the jewish people would send in Chicken soup for them and then they shared the recipe, a little different from yours but same principle. "we Catholics used to call it "Jewish Penicillin" no insult intended and s it is interecting to see that when poorly people often ask for chicken sopup.

Just a true little story, I hope no offence will be taken by anyone, in fact I worked for the Jewish Welfare Board for just over a year when I was first qualified as a nurse.

Message nos. 2 this morning

Ann has reminded me that we need to think of a name for our book so all sugestions on the electronic post card, yes I mean this thread, and all will be considered. We will whittle them down, hoping there will be enough to whittle down, and then put two or three to the vote.

If you would like any other info please post here for all to see or send a PM to me or Ann

Bye for now

Persophone

What a great Name...hope you do not mind me saying this!!!

Thanks for the contribution and please keep them coming...

Any recipe will be seriously considered and why not have a recipe to be cooked outside in the ground. Many years ago I had a penpal near to Rotorua and he used to tell me about meals cooked this way,,,wish I could recall his name all I can recall is that his brother was a fire fighter!!!!

Persephone Report 24 Sep 2009 10:09

My mother used to make this so we named it
Alison's Sultana Loaf.
Sorry it's not in metric.
8 ozs flour 1 cup sultanas
4 ozs sugar 1/2 oz butter
1 tsp baking soda 1 tblspn golden syrup
1 1/2 tspn baking powder

Put all ingredients into a basin except flour and baking powder, add 1 cup of boiling water and stir well. When cool add flour and baking powder.
Pour into greased loaf tin and bake 60 mins in a moderate oven.
My oven has a fan so it takes less time to cook.
It is so easy and was very handy here when we had a butter shortage way back when I was young.

Golden Syrup is a godsend, I add it to pikelet (think you call them drop scones) batter and use less sugar. Also when making custard with custard powder I use golden syrup instead of sugar and it makes it sort of caramelly.

cheers
Persephone

I could also tell you how to make a hangi - which is food cooked in the ground but that would not be a family recipe that would be a heritage recipe from NZ. (the country that started the Pavlovas)
