In the 1990's my aunt told me that my uncle had sewn their excess savings into the upholstery of a dining chair as they were only allowed to have limited savings and still claim a bit of benefit. The amount allowed went up but the money stayed in the chair. My uncle died, and in 1997, my aunt died also. I forgot about the hidden hoard until after the funeral. Cousin mentioned that her mum didn't 'leave much' and she'd passed the money on to her children. I asked what they did with the furniture...like chairs....she said 'oh, we got rid of everything...house clearance were very good; took the lot, even those old chairs no-one wanted.......

I bet house clearance men are millionaires. They must find all manner of things that are worth a lot of money.

When my mum decided to move into a flat (Dad had just died) in 1988 she got some house clearance people in without telling us. They cleared some of the rooms. They said they were sorry they couldn't give her any money as the stuff was worthless. Ever so charming they were, said mum. Brother told her rather tartly that the prisons were full of charming people.
