Yesterday, we visited a town about 8/9 miles from here, and in the next county, and phew, it has taken me until now to talk of the event. I know our towns are going down hill, but what an experience it was.
When I was a lass in the early '60's I had worked there for the Viyella Group, and had been a few times over the years for the market that sold knitting wool suitable for machines.
But my visit yesterday was out of this world. It was so rough, I think we were lucky to get out alive. The pub was full, and it was not even 11.00. and even the dogs had a fag on. It was that rough.
Where oh where have our 'towns' gone to. Ours is not the best of towns, but it is better than that.

Our town has gone to the dogs, as well. All the 'nice' people shop out of town and I don't blame anyone for doing it. Parking is a nightmare and expensive. They've pedestrianised the main street and it looks like a ghost town if you get there early. When I worked in the town I used to pass a pub with tables and chairs outside. There 'they' sit, buggies parked up, with a pint and a fag. This was before 11 am!

Last year I spent around 4 months working on the edge of Salisbury. It was years since I had been there and had such wonderful Memories, well......I do not want o upset the folk of Salisbury, BUT I will not be going back in the near future. I must say though that Mere in Wilts was still as pretty and beautiful as ever.

This year I was near to Aylesbury, another town failed by the building planners, rather run down and sad looking in many parts but once again out in the small areas< I was in a tiny place called Hulcott, it was beautiful...

I am now going on 2nd OCT to just outside Hastings...I wonder what that will be like

27 or 28 yrs used to have a holiday house in Bexhill, should I go and have a look??????

Bridget
Hastings used to be very 'run down', but they've made a real effort in recent years to improve the look of the town.
They've chased up owners with shabby property and required them to tidy up the appearance of their buildings.
It's helped alot, so I hope you're not too disappointed.

Last month went to Liverpool area where OH ancestors all came from expecting it to be still the same as the 1800's but what a surprise I got, all new builds and very smart, very friendly pub and excellent meal. The parish church was still in situ and well maintained church yard and I was able to find and take photos of four family graves, so well done MELLING.

It's probably common knowledge on here, the opinion I have of the City that I have the dubious pleasure of living in. I live about 1-2 miles out of the centre, on a council housing estate, close by a small shopping centre.

Nobody knows what a litter bin is, they spit all over the pavement, and even relieve themselves openly in the street. There are feral youths openly dealing drugs, throwing stones at peoples windows, and teararsing up and down the road on illegal moterbikes.

When I do venture into town, lets just say, I feel like a foriegner in my own country.

Can I just add, I am a country bumpkin by birth, and I find the smell of pig sh""t a lot less offensive than the detritis that human beings create.

Also pigs will keep their sh""t separate from their sleeping quarters.

I agree about the architecture, we had some lovely victorian buildings in our town.

Guess what, it has nearly been pulled down to make way for giant leggo.

They built a beautiful big greenhouse in victorian style, and promptly erected a zonking great multi-storey office block next to it, blocking out all the light.,How in heaven are the plants supposed to grow???
