Some of these entries are so sad and distressing.

When I was nursing and as Home Manager I would like everyone to be aware that whenever a person is admitted to hospital or to a care home of any description there is a legal obligation on the person in charge at the time to have a complete inventory of all belongs including jewlery. We are not allowed to state "GOLD" "silver" etc but must record as Yellow metal, white metal etc.
Relatives and friends should be requetsed to take valluable items away for safe keeping and again sign to say that they have done so. The reason is that staff cannot be responsible for valauable items, as they should be employeed in their specialist work, be it cleaning, cooking , nursing, providing support etc.

People do hide jewlery in some very strange places...I recall a lady who used to buy slippers that were one size to big and she put all her rings in cotton wool at the bottom of her slippers!!

Rings do NOT have to be removed if a person is going for surgery although it is adviced to prevent it possibly being lost, the ring though must be covered over. and MAY be removed if there is an emergency.

As for funeral Directors I have always found them to be very sympathetic and I have always povided them with a detailed list of any items going with the deceased person.


Please if you do not have this type of information given to you..ASK FOR IT< IT IS YOUR RIGHT and my blood boils when I hear such sad stories.

Sorry I cannot help about the sovereins but why not start with going to a Major Bank in a large city, they are likely to have some advice or specialistas they can reccommend to you

Take them to a local auction house they will give a valuation, for insurance purpose,,,,,,,,also a value of what they may reach at auction price and will probally recomend a specialist coin auction sale.


dealers buy at auction with a half or less street value.

Gold coins are bought at gold value often scrap prices,,,unless they are rare then that ups the price....

whilst on the subject, seriously who can recommend a good place to sell gold and to value my Dads very large collection of coins going back to about 1700. We have got quite a few sovereigns aswell but when we asked at one dealers they said theyd just give us the value of the gold but my Dad was a banker and he always implied that the sovereigns were all special dates and would have extra value. Unfortunately he had alzeimers for several years before his death so when he died we were just left with a box of coins that we didnt understand much about

Berona. Your story made me feel sick. How can anyone be so heartless to remove jewellery from someone who has just passed away.

It obviously had more sentimental value to you, than monetary value to the thief.

My Mum died whilst under anaesthetic and her belongings were handed to me before I left the hospital. Her body was taken to the City morgue for autopsy and identification, and collected by the funeral director and taken to their chapel for the service. From there, it was taken privately to the crematorium.

Only after it was all over, I examined her belongings and found that her wedding ring was missing. It had worn thin over more than 50 years and would have had to be cut to remove it. I rang the hospital and was told that it would have been taped over for the operation, so it 'would' have been taken off at the Morgue. From there, nobody knew anything about it - the Morgue, Funeral home, Crematorium. Each one said that IF it had been on her finger, they would have removed it, because they do that 'all the time'.

Well, somebody got that ring. Only a very thin one by then, but they helped themselves and would no doubt do that every chance they got, so I don't doubt that there is money in gold, for someone to stoop that low.

Oh no, they're doing it on that side of the pond too? I'd assumed it was a yankee phenomenon (we get the ad on US television stations here, maybe they're on Canadian ones too, haven't noticed).

Yes, that gold jewelery that you have just lying around collecting dust. I mean, you do, don't you? I know I do. Not. I have my grandmother's gold chain my mum just gave me that I'd eat cat food before I sold.

People are parting with their wedding rings ffs, because they've lost their jobs. And if they took a bus to a local jewelery story, they'd do better.

Those same scams get in touch and say you have won a lot of money.

Could you just send us X amount to release your fortune which doesn't exist and those who usually fall for it are the elderly.

Funny this should come up, but when I watch those adverts they remind me of those "You have inherited a fortune from an African prince, we want to present you as his heir" scam e-mails. Every time I see them, I think something seems odd.

I am not sure I would trust them to send the money back if I sent them my precious metals! (Also, they tell us that gold prices are at an "all-time high" but, knowing nothing about gold prices, I wouldn't know if they were being truthful or not.)

They are parasites and shouldn't be allowed air time. They prey on people during hard times.

Then you get the other lot... Compensation.

Yes I am 18mths old and my nanny and I were at the zebra crossing. My nappy slid down my legs and I had to step out of it and everyone laughed.

Can I get compensation for my loss of dignity please and for sub standard goods I was wearing?

It's something that has happened since time ( or gold goods) began. I have in the past sold my gold, I have also pawned it. The way some operate is unfair but then so were many of the 'uncles' in the war. Without them tho' many families would not have survived.

No doubt the crunch has affected them and they see a way of cashing in !

sick to death of it - of course people are getting ripped off - you can judge that for yourself by the amount of money they must all be spending on adverts!!! I particularly like the one where the fellow says "You get the cash and you can spend it on anything you like!!! Really, how very kind!!!

GLAD THAT IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO LIGHT THAT THEY ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF.
SOME POOR SOULS MAY BE SO DESPERATE THEY WILL SELL IT FOR A FRACTION OF THE PROPER VALUE.
