Hi I have an ancestor William Brown born 1832 at Little Torrington. He is in the 1841 census on his own, is this unusual for those times. I am trying to find his father Samuel and his mother. |

Where my rels come from in Derbyshire, they are nearly old enough to go down the pit at that age. I've found children of similar age, looking after smaller siblings. |

Is it possible he was staying with relatives, maybe his mother's family? hence the different surname? |

I found one the other day aged 15 by himself. One other point. Did you look at the original of the census. Very occasionally the rest of the family are on the previous or next page. Just check one page back or forward. Of course this doesn't happen if the record is in the middle of the page. |

Following on from Sherlock's post, I had children at the top of a torn page and the pages before were missing. Never found the parents but I presume they were living there. |
