When Ancestry put online the incoming passenger lists and I found OH's grandfather, lost since 1930s,
We managed to track his movements and OH has since visited his grave and been able to tell grandfather's 2 surviving daughters, - now in 80s and 90s, what became of their father.

I can't top Jane's discovery but mine was probably reading my 6xgreat grandfather's will (by a fluke he is also my 7xgreat grandfather . . .), because records for the church his son and daughter in law attended only went back to 1736 and the son was born in 1732, so I had no idea how many children 7xgreat grandad had produced. (I knew it was at least 4.)

But then I found this will, which told me there were three girls and three boys, it named the girls' husbands (those who had married) and also named a grandchild of the man, plus it mentioned that the dead man (George) left his "wearing apparel" and two Bibles to his son, my ancestor. I found it quite touching because George was probably between his fifties and his seventies and he said he was "a little out of health but of sound mind".

that's lovely Kate!

So glad you've found you're in touch with living relatives Jane, that's really special :) As is your find Gwyn. I bet after all these years they never thought they'd find out.

Good luck with your search Rose, let us know whether you manage to sort them out :)

Dear Secret Red Squirrel

Hello

Very recently, I gained access to parish records and found my great-grandfather's x2 marriage in 1876 and then I managed to trace details of his brother and family, who I did not have much info on.

I have located where the church was where these events were recorded. Ironically, it is in the next district to me not over the other side of London as originally thought.

Best wishes

Finding my paternal family came from a long line of Farmers in Essex, with lots of branches, which I have been able to trace different relatives.

Mine was proving that I am descended directly from the Blackwell family that survived the Plague in Eyam.

Still havn't broken down my maternal grandmothers wall though.

I am still reeling from mine!
I wish I could say that it was through my hard work, but the discovery is entirely due to a lady who was shown as a connection on Ancestry. She turns out to be my 6th cousin!
We exchanged information, and she is now positive that my paternal Gran's family are descended from a daft Norman Knight who carried the Papal banner for William the Conqueror throughout the Battle of Hastings. I still can't believe it.
This chap was born in 1036!
I cannot take it all in; thirty-six generations back!
She has now included my direct ancestors on her tree, and wants me to continue the line upwards on mine.
But - I still feel as though I am poaching by putting any of the new line onto my tree - although I have put the banner-carrier on, just to remind me that breakthroughs DO happen!!

Joanna

And - through Genes' Hot MatchesI have found about four distant relatives who have become really good friends - so I would never give up Genes!

Last year, I found someone who may well have been direct line, on the First Fleet (numerous x times gt grandfather) I haven't proven it yet.... but I am sure it is him!! Also.... same line a couple of generations later, my Gt Grandfather may have been born of a bigamous marriage, lol.... still trying to find that one out, too!! I knew he was classed as *illigitimate*... I have his birth certificate... but wow... that is real scandal, lolol That was just a couple of days ago.....

Today I received two photos of my ggrandfather born 1848, from a third cousin who I knew nothing of until a week ago when I confirmed that he had gone on to have a second family (having split up with his first wife, leaving their four children).

Last week when Stevie found my father's other two registrations - with references that I can use to get his birth certificate!!!

Yes - I did say other two!! I'd found two but they referred to another ledger concerned with his adoption at the age of 16. It appears his birth wasn't registered until he was adopted - he was registered 4 times!!!

I loved my gran but she's caused me soooooo many headaches!! LOL
