Well, I've got one in my right eye, a bit young at 55! It seems that I can't have an operation for about 2 years, that's doing my head in! Everything is so distorted, but I can see at night (which I shouldn't) ! Apparantly I've got it at about 50% vision, they won't operate until there's about 33%. This time last year there was nothing, I think they've got their sums wrong! I hope so, the last 5 weeks have been awful!

Persephone Report 1 Oct 2009 01:56

I had it bad in my left eye and my right eye took over and did all the work, I did stop driving for about a year and my right eye kept watering, I guess from overuse. The trouble was that the other eye was also starting to deteriorate and in the end I had each eye operated on about a month apart. Marvellous now - can see for miles.
I would've been a bit older than you when I had it done but I really can't see (for want of a better word) why two years. It sounds to me that it is deteriorating quicker than they have realised, but I am no opthamologist.
Have you gone and got a second opinion?

regards
Norma

Good well that's not too far away. I see you mention Diabetes on another thread so does that contribute to the factor, or is that Glaucoma that I am thinking of?

I had my first cataract op at fifty-four, the 2nd one 4 yrs later. I am now 74, and my sight is fine, withglasses because I have a slight squit which gets tiring if I dont wear glasses. Have worn them since i was 16. I first discovered I was diabetic, when they did the blood tests before the first op.and they nearly didnt do it as my sugar was so high, but I ran up and down the hospital stairs until I had exercised it down and they went ahead.

Well I had my diabetic eye screen yesterday, they told me that the cateract is so bad they won't be able to see if there are any problems with that eye. I now have an appointment with the doctor next Tuesday to see if I can be referred.

In answer to your question Persephone, it can be related to diabetes, though I doubt it in my case. The diabetic eye scans are usually looking for Glaucoma with damage to the blood vessels in the eyes

Has anyone with Glaucoma had a cataract done ?

I have bi lateral Glaucoma (under control so I am told) also a cataract in my left eye, they will do the cataract but will not say if the glaucoma will be affected,or are not telling me !

So am reluctant to chance it until I cannot see !

Hi Elizabeth

I'm sorry I don't know the answer, but beware, I beleive, if you leave the cataract for too long you may loose the sight in that eye

Take care
