Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 3 Oct 2009 17:08

Cant find my previous threads (or rather Genes cant find em!!) so just to let you know that my SIL Joan who was in Harefield Hospital cos she had an abscess in her chest was transferred back to Northwick Park Hospital last Wednesday. We tried to visit on Tuesday this week but roadworks on the M25 tossed us off and we got hopelessly lost!! we left home in Kent at 10am and at 2.15pm we gave up and went home .spent 6 hours and drove some 150 plus miles and didnt get to the Hospital.
Joan though was sent home yesterday, she had been asking to go home for some time as she had been in hospital for around 5 weeks, They decided she could go home even though she still has a feeding tube in as her chest is still swollen. The district nurse will be in several times a day ,Her OH cant help cos he is housebound too and this last week has been getting Meals on Wheels l but this took time to arrange .I think the Agencies still have problems interacting with each other
Our BIL is housebound and was left on his own when Joan was whisked off to Hospital without her having time to get her OH looked after.Thank goodness for friends and neighbours who initially stepped in.
Anyway Joan was allowed home yesterday even though she still cant eat and has a feeding tube in .The district nurse is supposed to monitoring her .hope that Joan gets all the help she needs cos she was being liquid fed every 4 hours in Hospital

I hope she makes good progress now that she is home, maybe worrying about her OH was holding up her recovery, at least now she can see he is OK. What a pain not to be able to get there after all that travelling, I am sure you were both exhausted and frustrated. Best wishes to you SiL

I'm sorry to say that threads keep being lost.

It is a very stressful time for you all but am glad that she is home now and hope that all shall be well.

Well spoke to Joan today and an pleased to say she is up and about. She still has the feeding tube in although its been reduced in size so she can get her clothes on !! /She has been told it has to stay in place for three months till the inners have healed and then they can withdraw it!. She is eating normally?? ie can swallow small amounts of finely chopped food like egg etc ,she doesn't feel hungry though which is a bit worrying cos she may not be eating enough.
Her OH is still getting meals on wheels and the district nurse is NOW attending to treat her OH ulcer on his foot and to renew the dressings on Joan's chest where the drains were in, she had two drains ,one has stopped !! but the other is still oozing a bit altho she has been told its OK.
She is almighty FED UP!! her house is a tip after her being in Hospital for 5 weeks but she is too weak on her feet to try and do anything , I have said to her DONT it doesnt matter it will still be there and you can gradually do things as you can and you wont do yourself any good overdoing things,
All in all though she is lucky to still be with us !

I hope she gets well soon.
I met a young woman in hospital who had an abscess on her breast.... very very painful.
Bless her.
Has anyone concerned in her care made any complaint about not being able to reach her ?
How did they manage to get her home?
If they can get her home, someone surely could get the nurse there to treat her?
