Stair Lifts

I'm with the others, stair lifts are too slow for an urgent bladder, and a nightmare to hoover round, don't ask me how you have a new carpet fitted.

We went down the downstairs living for my dad, and after a lot of huffing and puffing, he loved snuggling up in bed on winter nights, telly on,and near the kitchen.

The money was better spent on downstairs shower room, any day.

Hope this helps, love, Nina in windy Sheffield

The speed of the things hadn't crossed my mind, Its good to get some negative comments on the darned things as the brochures show June Whitfield whizzing up and down smiling and waving like the Queen Mother and Dad thinks it will solve all his mobility problems

My sister has one, and while I think it has made her lazy as she no longer attempts to walk far, and she has no arthritis, she wouldnt be without it. Makes it very hard for anyone else to get up the stairs if they dont want to use it, and they are very slow..

Tell me about it , mother is the worst, 89 ! Do a swap if you like. Tea too hot?
nothing ever quite suits her !
No seriously they arent the best option , and neighbours have the joy of hearing the rumblings through the wall. You'll have to explain the downsides, and just present him with his new bedroom downstairs, no choice, be firm !

Thanks Lindsey, there is a loo downstairs and I have suggested the idea but 83 year olds can be very stubborn lol

Is there no possibility you could bring his bed downstairs , and a commode if no loo is available? I used to be a carer and it was so difficult to get the person to sit properly on the seat that we had lots of knocks and bruises to knees and ankles. Plus long waits for the emergency engineer when half-way up !

Thanks Alan, that idea hadn't occurred to me

Before investing in a stair lift, try contacting your local social services department/occupational therapist - may need to be referred by your GP. They installed one for my father and also took on the responsibility of the annual service and breakdowns - which do happen.

Anyone got one - what do they cost and any recommendations would be appreciated as I'm in the process of trying to arrange one for my 83 year old Dad and am just drowning in glossy brochures and wonderful promises of just how good each company's product is
