Some of our people never get any visitors. Not because they dont have family.
Its because the family cant cope with not being recognised,or because the person we look after bares no resemblance to the relative they once knew
They want to remember them as they were
Its very sad when they have died, and you see just how many relatives they had
But as i said before ,we are all different
We cope with things in different ways,it is very hard for some familes to deal with

Hi Mo
I know what you say about guilt is true, and I went every day to see my Dad, but still found it hard to let go after looking after him most of my life

I couldnt do nursing
I could not cope with early death,or anythiing to do with children
I would be hopeless
I think nurses do a great job
So lets all hear it for nursing staff, now they are dedicated people

By the way ,there should be no guilt about not being able to look after someone at home
Some times it is just not possible to do it
We have 20 residential ,and 20 dementia patients. With most of them I would say it would not be possible to give them the 24 hour care they need at home

Good morning Kitty,Gwen, Hayley and Mo

I agree carers/nurses are the backbone of society and we owe them a lot for taking on this hard work, most times in difficult circumstances...I applaud you Mo xx
I live with guilt of having Dad live in permanent care due to his dementia, but know everyone there did their best to make his last days as comfortable as could be.

Thanks for this thread Kitty and hope your Mum is still as well as can be xx

Throws Hayleys display towels on the floor and jumps on them
lol
The main difference betwen caring for the elderly and nursing is that our people never get well again. There is only one way out for them .
My fav little lady is 100 years old in a few weeks,so we have a big party coming up. All her family will be there and music is booked too for it.
Her body may be old and frail, but her mind is very sharp and quick still
Thats one of the pleasures we have to look forward to.
The entire home will join in. hard work but worth it,just to see their faces light up
Some of us who are not on duty may even share a few drinks as well
Now that is hard work
lol

Hi Kay ~~~

Kay????

Kay???? Report 4 Oct 2009 10:22

Kitty ~~often in some cases,Carers can deal with the person much better than family, but its also gets an emotional roller coaster for them aswell, its a job hard to switch off from.

Them that are commited do a fantastic job, that goes all too often without worthy praise.

Granny keep up the brilliant job you do..

Gwen hope its years away before you need this.

Hayley~

As a carer for the last 20 years I have to say a BIG thankyou Kitty
It is a stressful job,but a rewarding job too
Yes,we get punched ,kicked, bruised and bitten at times
But we have to remember that it isnt personal,it is a disease that is doing it
A very nasty disease, with no cure
It is just as hard for carers and family to deal with
But there is also laughter and joy at times too
It is not a job every one can do as we are all different, just like the people we care for
We dont always get it right, but we do try,and when we do get it right it is hoped that the persons quality of life is bettered in some way
The majority of familes are very good, caring and supportive,so it is a joint effort
So thank the families of the suffers too

I worked in care and nursing homes for a number of years and know how stressful it can be.

I have looked after Mum who has Alzheimers and know how tough that is.

Mum is in a home and for the past 5 years has been looked after by staff who have become her second family in many ways.

Yes I carry an element of guilt that we can't look after her in our own home, but as it is impossible, we do the best we can to see her frequently and appreciate so much the way her carers do the very best they can under sometimes very trying circumstances.

So from me a public thank you to all of you on behalf of we relatives who appreciate all you do for not only our loved ones, but for the families as well.

xx
