The benefit of GR Community boards

On another post, have said I went to my first visit to the U3A Genealogy group. I was stunned by the number of people (i.e. all 10 of them) who said they wouldn't use GR to help cos they thought the "people were not real". When asked why, they said the names were "suspect". I tried to reassure them that Madmeg, JaneyCanuck, Jonesey, Anne of Green Gables, sorry missed loads of you out, were very real people with lots to offer. I might have convinced one or two to use the boards.

For myself, I don't know how I would have managed without you at times, so trying to convince others that they should give you a whirl, irrespective of your pseudonyms.

Best wishes to all

Margaret

Hi dancingdee, you're a new name to me. Are you real?

I won't single out anyone in particular, cos everyone does their bit. Just hope others learn the value of this site and its contributors cos there is nothing better!

Love

Margaret (oh, I am real too!)

Well, I thought I was real; I am real according to my bank.

I was a real nuisance to my mum when I was little.

I'm real!
I've contacted a few distant relatives on this site and exchanged information that put flesh on ancestors, both for them and for me. what's better than being contacted by your great uncles grand daughter and sharing information we have about our respective grand and great grandparents - it's wonderful!
I've also had great help from people who aren't related, but have helped me break down brick walls - after all two heads are better than one!

Forgot you Shirley, you shoulda been on my list. Birdsinanest, that's a good one, didn't think of the bank manager!

Am I getting silly now?

It just got to me.

Jackie Report 9 Oct 2009 00:22

I'll let you all into a little secret, but which one's real?

What name shall I choose?

Davina - my real name that I hate and was only called it at school
Jackie - my second name that I've always been called by family and friends
or
Dee - my board name because if people see Davina on my PMs they don't mind Dee

So you can call me Jackie or Dee x

btw, thanks for your help too Shirley,I,m getting the hang of it ♫, I know you're real too because you've helped me. x

Hi Arctic Blonde (sorry can't C&P, so can't do the twiddly bits)

I love the name Ginny. My Nan's name was Jane and my Granddad always called her Ginny. We always called her "Nanny Gin". For years I thought it was because she liked "gin and orange".

Duuurr!!.

xx

Hi Dee, well revelations tonight, and me always so careful not to add your real names to any messages I post lol
Hope you are ok, long time no chat! Next week will be good, Mon to Fri as K at work on lates!

I suppose Purple Sparkly Diamond can be a bit wierd to some folk as a name, but answering to Purple comes second nature now lol

I have a cousin Valerie whose parents always called her Ginny and she has a niece called Ginny too who I think was christened Virginia - never did know why Val became Ginny tho! Don't think she was on the gin at a young age lol

I have tried to explain the closeness and camaradarie on the boards to others - not sure they ever quite understand tho.

Some people are wary of internet friendships, but GR is SUCH a happy place ans so friendly that if they tried it they would be converted. I met Jude through GR and she has become a personal friend, who i would most likely never have met.

I'm definitely reall!!! honest!!!!

I've also met quite a number of GR members and liked every one of them

It's a great place to make friends, male and female - on the whole I would think 99.9% of the people on these boards are lovely - just one or two who seem to be WUMs - the rest are great

I'm not real.... I'm a cardboard cutout.... but I have a stand-in who looks nothing like me... she goes to all the meets in my place... I am really young, petite, brilliantly clever, and tell fibs, lolol ;¬)) My stand in isn't... she is a little bit older than I am, and wears a bigger dress size, lolol. Oh, and her hair looks like a toilet brush, lol ;¬))

Love the replies folks, hope you enjoyed the jolly.

Was meant to be serious though, re the help we have all had on here, I think we are all agreed on that.

Will take it back to my next meeting with the U3A, seems they need a bit of educating.

Love

Margaret
