Microsoft will issue its biggest ever security update on 13 October.

The update will include 13 bulletins that between them tackle 34 vulnerabilities.

Microsoft said that eight of the bulletins were rated as critical - the most serious sort of vulnerability.

The security patches will close loopholes in many different programs including different editions of Windows, Internet Explorer and some elements of Office.

One update, rated as critical, tackles a loophole in Internet Explorer 8 running under Windows 7. The next version of Microsoft's operating system is due to be released on 22 October.

Most people will get the updates automatically but links to download them can also be found on Microsoft's security pages. Once applied to a PC, the machine will need to be re-started before the fixes take effect.

Thanks Brian(i) for alerting us to the updates. I've just gone on to Microsoft now and updated it.
What is puzzling me is that my settings are on automatically install new updates at 9am every morning. I updated this morning at 10am and they hadnt been automatically updated.
Can anyone tell me why it didnt update automatically - am I doing something wrong?

Thanks MGHS - I will have to keep an eye on it and see what happens with future updates.

Yesterday I checked every half hour, was 8-20pm before I could get the updates.

My updates didn't appear until well into the afternoon, towards teatime. I was beginning to think I had a problem after Brian's information, but they did arrive eventually.

Must go and 'fire up' the desktop, to let it download too. It only gets switched on if I want to print something!

I've downloaded/installed the 13 items for XP and so far no probs. Someone mentioned the automatic download didn't work for her laptop. Daft question perhaps but was Lap Top online at 9am?

It was me who said about my pc didn't download the updates automatically. It was on my desktop and I had turned it on at about 7am well in time for the 9am supposedly automatic update.
Although it was on at 9am, I wasn't using it then, it was on standby.
Would that have made a difference?
I thought that even if it was on standby, it should still automatically
do the updates?
