Deadly brain abscesses should be added to the list of risks of having a tongue piercing, say doctors.

Archives of Neurology reports how a 22-year-old man who died in hospital following multiple brain abscesses weeks after getting his tongue pierced.

The man's Israeli doctors warn infection can spread in the bloodstream from the piercing up to the brain.

Piercing can more commonly lead to chipped teeth and oral infections, and sometimes heart problems, say experts.

Despite the risks, tongue piercings remain popular.

But experts say people should think twice and put their health before fashion.

I saw a young girl having her nostril pierced last week in our local MARKET HALL. The so-called "jeweller and body-piercer's" stall was just 30 feet away from a butcher's counter. People must be mad. I would let nobody without a qualification of at least a Registered Nurse put a needle in me.

Apologies if you consider me to be old-fashioned, but I consider ANY form of body piercing to be unnatural and a mutulation.

And that includes pierced ears. Studs are a definite turn-off.

A neighbour recently had her ears pierced and had to have them reversed due to an infection.

Can't understand why people think they are attractive. I would be scared it came apart in my mouth and I sucked it into my lungs......same with nose studs. Do they take them out at night. Whatever will the next fad be......decorative scars perhaps!! lol

I will tell you why Annx. Its called peer pressure.

If Britney Spears, Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and various soap "stars" painted their legs blue and yellow stripes, their ears and nose red and had a horseshoe hanging from a pierced lip, then the stupid youngsters of today would copy them.

I am glad I am not a teenager today, I was lucky and had the 60s.

When I was a teenager I wanted to be different from anyone else. Dont understand the sheeplike attitude of todays young.
