thanks for your answer iv been trying to send a copy of the image but ancestry doen't allow me too, ive checked on their neighbours they are dairymen and a waterman on the other side to them.

Joseph Gladstone the father is a brushmaker so i dont think they would of been very well off my great grandad went on to be a hairdresser as too his brother John James Peace Gladstone who was born in 1857 another brother was a plumber so i dont know but thank you very much for your help

Perhaps it was two flats (i.e.upstairs and downstairs in one house and one was empty and the enumerator forgot to put it empty.
Are there different families in the houses either side?

Wonder if it was two terraced houses knocked into one, like people do today? I was going to suggest that perhaps they owned both and rented one out but it would perhaps depend how wealthy they were.

Or, the enumator could have mixed it up. I have seen records saying "1 House 2 Court" and then a street name, and next door would be "1 House 3 Court", which sounds a bit like the equivalent of a flat now. Perhaps that was what should have been written down?

It did occur to me that maybe everybody had their own bedroom, but I'm not sure on that one as I always though that - even if you only had space for one bed in the room - two sisters or two brothers would share the one bed rather than having one each?

Hi I'm sorry to ask but could anyone come up with an answer for me please as to why in 1881 my Gladstone family should be living in no 4 and no 6 Berwick Street Gateshead and not just one address. There are only 6 people living in the house so i thought one house would be enough.
