Well I have finally got a reply from the person on Ancestry with my direct ancestors marriage in their tree. Their reply:.........

"George was my grandfather's direct ancestor and I know it's correct because my 2nd cousin has researched it"

Say no more!!! The 2nd cousin hasn't got the marriage certificate otherwise they would know that George's father was called John not James! LOL

Another waste of my time, I knew I shouldn't have bothered contacting said person. :-((

No, some folk won't listen. I think some even get offended if you try to offer advice.

I tried to tell someone that son George died aged 16 and is buried in Northampton. They have him married and living in Wariwckshire. I have the death cert and the burial record.

They had three children from this couple, John, George, as above, and William.

John was from a former wife and William was the son of the second wife from her second husband.

They haven't changed anything. Perhaps they prefer to keep it SIMPLES! :-)

Tell them. Some people do listen. :)

As an aside...I have told a couple of people that my Aunt did NOT have a daughter Susan, just one son. How can I be so sure? the Susan was ME!!
Oh no, they say, we saw her at the Aunt's house. Well yes they did. I spent a lot of time with her after my Mother died in 1959.

Hi Mary, I suppose it's because I am aware how tempting it is to add someone who you 'know' must be yours lol

I have two Williams , father and son...between them they married 3 Anns..it would have been very easy to mix up , especially if I hadn't known the surname of the third Ann from my mum in the first place lol.

their father was William too... and I have enough Marys to sink a ship, and Thomas's to sail her ( watermen lol)

I feel the same as you.....if I've gone wrong I'd much prefer to know and be able to correct it.

And on that basis I have just sent a message to the tree owner......I won't hold my breath on them changing it though lol.

I can see where they have gone wrong.....they also have an ancestor of the same name, born the same year and place as mine, but different parents. So they have just found the likeliest marriage and used that info, without bothering to buy the cert! :-)))

I would want someone to tell me if I had something wrong , I think , so would probably let them know ...I have benefited from info given by 'related by marriage' rellies...and hope they may have done so by my details, even if it is only a confirmation of what they already have, but which might save someone the cost of certs( which in some cases aren't needed because of the family papers, photos etc I already have).

Kay, I have just burst a bubble on Ancestry only this morning. Toyed for a while if I should, but it really annoyed me seeing my great grandmother married to the wrong man, also someone else must have copied them and now there are two wrong trees. Know I would be only to pleased if someone pointed out a mistake to me, I would hate to think I was following the wrong line.

My Nan had 2 Sisters, now be it that their Parents marriage 14 years after my Nan was born & she was the youngest, 2 had their Dads surname & 1 has their Mums

On here their are 4 for us that has them 3 ladies in our tree but im the only 1 that has the info as above in my tree

Will i tell them theirs is wrong......hell no, if they can be bothered bearing
in mind that 1 is the G/Son of the Sister that had her Mum surname

I don't bother unless they contact me. Then half the time they don't believe you because someone else told them that they are descended from my ancestor's elder brother and namesake who actually died before he was a year old. Or they believe you without question, which is just as dopey. If they do contact me I tell them straight away that I think they're wrong which saves a lot of messing about.

Having said that, I do have a couple of wonderful contacts who I work along side with:)

I don't bother telling them! I quite often see one of mine who appears in a number of trees (all public) where they have obviously just copied from each other.

If they can't be bothered to check themselves I won't put them right, especially if my rellie is totally disconnected or they have thousands of names and no background info.

If I find that the owner of the tree is a cousin (even removed a few times) then I do contact them.

I'm like you.....unless I have the certs/proof I don't put them in my tree!

I've also just found someone on Ancestry who has my gg grandparents, their marriage date and 3 of their children. So far all correct, except that they have the wrong parents for my gg grandfather and no parents at all for my gg grandmother. Now if they had at least Bought the marriage cert they would have known the father's correct names and occupations and know that the info they have is not correct!!

It looks as though they have just found something that looks about right and used that info instead of actually buying a cert or 2 and getting it right! It does annoy me because someone else in the future may use that incorrect info and perpetuate the errors.

Do I bother to contact them and tell them they are wrong or leave them to find out for themselves??

Edit to add: And LDS has got my grandmother with a middle name fgs! She never had a middle name, fact. But I can't get them to change that either :-((

Know what you mean Joan,,its just a plain lazy way of doing it....unless 100% proof has been got from the start,which can be shared.

Helping a friend back from their gtgrandparents whos marriage certificate has been got,,,an Ancestry look does indeed have this couple on many trees,ie copied from one to another !,,,,,,,but their main stuff has been from what seemed right census info,looked right and so must be right !!,,

,Oh.!! they have all got trees thats totally wrong !!!!! ,,,,,do I leave them in the dark or reveal whats the right family line??..:}}}}}}}

This has stemed from not buying any certificates ,,,
