I have received 5 pages of Hot Matches this morning all relating to Mary Morgan born in Wales.

Berona Report 26 Oct 2009 03:31

Bernie - I am not a computer programmer, but I have worked with them and your examples COULD well be matched. Only names and years are programmed to match.

Joseph Smith 1900 of West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire can only be matched with a Joseph Smith 1900. The computer will not recognise a different word as a 'match' - so Joe Smith 1900 would not be a match for Joseph Smith 1900.

Similarly, if the place for Joseph Smith 1900 was Liverpool on one tree, it would not match a tree which had the place as West Derby, or W.Derby or Lancashire, or Lancs. - it has to be an exact match - and there are far too many variations of too many places for it to be programmable. This is why you get them matching the name and year but not the place.

By not including the place in the program, it does give you the chance of finding the same person born in West Derby on one tree and born in Liverpool on another tree - but you could get them born in Amsterdam or Melbourne too - that's what Hot Matches is all about - giving you a list from which you can choose a name which might be a connection for you. The rest of the names don't matter - so if they don't apply to you - delete them!.

And don't forget - he just might have been born while his parents were living in Amsterdam, and they moved back to Liverpool while he was a baby!

Hi Jill....I'm glad you found your unknown cousin & I agree the extra pages of non matches are worth those that are correct. I've had contact with a 1st cousin & couple of 3rd cousins.

Each of these I found, or they found me. Was were where there was a number of hotmatches found between our trees.

Also, as I said before. There is no point in deleting pages of unwanted matches. As they will all reappear when GR sends out the next lot of hotmatches.

Steve.

Well I am pleased that I am not the only one, in the nicest possible sense of course, but I think I will take the advice and just delete them, by the way today there was an additional 5 pages, and will also contact GR to find out just what is happening. Glad I have got it all off my chest cheers, Joan

GR has lost the plot with Hot Matches, most of us now have dozens, even hundreds of pages and it takes hours to go through to delete the same "no-chancers" every time. The only way GR can get it back to a reasonable service is delete the lot, then start again but put a geographical filter of say, 50 miles, or the adjacent county in place.

I will agree that "Joe Bloggs, 1899, Middlesborough" could possibly be matched with "Joe Bloggs, 1899, Yorkshire". But "Jane Bloggs, 1902, Stoke on Trent" can in no way be matched to "Jane Bloggs, 1902, St. Ives, Cornwall" or "1902, New South Wales."

I am with the majority on this one, I am just ignoring Hot Matches until it becomes a reasonable service rather than a time-consuming chore.

I tell you, Stevie, I couldn't believe it when I was matched with my own name and date of birth!!!!
On contacting I discovered it was an unknown first cousin of my husband who just happened to have heard that he married - ME! Such a lovely contact and made all the no-matches worth it.
cheers,
Jill
PS: I am easily pleased!

Stevie Report 25 Oct 2009 13:34

I believe GRs data base periodically (every 2wks I think) cross references all names in all trees. This then sends to you those that match (allegedly lol) to names in your tree.

Even if you delete pages of them. They will reappear when the next hotmatches are sent out again.

I only look at those that have 2 or more matches. This in my case is just 1½ pages. The odds of a one person match is very remote. So in my opinion, its not worth looking through pages of these & just ignore them.

Steve.

I just went to have a look as although I have been here 3 years have only just put a basic tree on here...one example...

4 Hot matches ! ...with (call him) 'Tom'

match 1, 2 , 3 ,4 Mary B ( mine born 1801 Middlesex)

Tom's...Mary B ...born Leicestershire
ditto X three .... and the really annoying thing is they have completely missed one definite match that I found myself lol

I love the hot matches!! But then I've only been on this site a few months. I quite wish they would send them more often as I have found a few very interesting matches and some long lost relations. I was even on one myself!
BUT....I know, I know,
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!
cheers,
Jill

But why oh why do we get e-mailed with hot matches and lists of family members in other trees with people that one is already in contact with?

I know damn well that the same list of people are in their tree because either I helped them or they helped me.

Are these lists computer generated - like phone messages that say would you like your chimney cleaned etc when you don't have a fireplace?

I've given up on hot matches. Like Joy, if they want me they can come looking for me.

There seems to be a glitch that replaces all the hotmatches you've already deleted. But of course, if you tell them they will just say it's you, not them, so it's a waste of time.

Every so often I do a name search (see above) myself, and sometimes that throws up possible contacts.

Please what is happening with hot matches? last week I cleared mine to 4 pages, this week I have been inundated with more and more every day I get them, last night I simply deleted pages of the new ones and tonight I switch on the computer and find that I now have 73 pages added since last night, I just cannot cope, is anyone else having this problem?
