Adjusting tree

Hi everyone
I am hoping someone can help me. I have compiled my tree sprouting from the wrong person (why would a family have so many Abraham Boakes!!) Is there a way of moving the family to the right relative without deleting it and starting again?
I am hoping there is as I have spent hours getting it all online.
The 'wrong' ancestors are still family, so I dont really want to delete them.
I see there is a 'change parents' button on the screen but it isnt highlighted so it wont let me click on it.

Any help would be great!

You can use your edit tools - copy five members onto clipboard and then
copy them from clipboard onto the right place. I have done this as I mixed up one of a group of relatives and had them belonging to the wrong sibling. Then when you delete you can only delete from the last one backwards if you understand what I mean - can't delete if they have someone below them etc.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks Norma
That made sense, I followed your directions but when I started deleting the people I had transferred I came upon another probelm. I cant delete myself even though I have added myself in the right place!!

Any ideas before I go mad??

Unfortunately on the GR tree you can not delete a person who has more than one link, so if there are descendants or partners you have to delete them first. You can not delete yourself either. So, you can delete a child from its parents, but only after you have deleted all its children and any spouses.

Sometimes it is possible to change the details for the 'wrong' person to the correct ones, or if the error is a relatively simple one then GR will sometimes help with a data adjustment.

Failing that you could download your tree as a gedcom, edit it on your PC using software such as Family Tree Makes, which will let you cut off entire branches and re-attach back to a different place. Once everything is sorted then you re-load your tree back to GR.

In fact many members prefer to manage their tree on their PC in this way, then every so often upload a copy to GR. It is very rare that I add or change anything directly onto GR these days.

If you don't want to bur a tree program just now then you can download a free tree program from the IGI, Family Search site called PAF. I don't have experience of this but there are others on here who use it and could advise.

BUT BEWARE... I've found that if I export my tree from GR as a Gedcom it screws up all the dates - so when I re-import it most of the 'year' information is missing... and with 18,700 records that's a bit of a problem!

I've asked 'them' to get it sorted... but still no solution yet...

Ah Simon so it is not only me that has had that problem. I decided to give up on that as I was not happy with it at all.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have got myself in a realy mess!! I now have duplicate people and still connected to the wrong branch!
Tech support have been in touch and they may be able to help me- if not I will just have to do the Gedcom option and redo the dates.

Thanks again
Amanda
