Yesterday my daughter phoned in a state of high excitement , she had just witnessed a small deer getting knocked by a car on the main road near her flat ( this being in the town ) . She had seen it get up and run off but it's back legs kept giving way and she was concerned about it so gave " chase " . She called the police , who alerted the RSPCA . the deer took refuge in someones back garden , amongst the shrubs. After about and hour and a half the RSPCA lady turned up . She had a look at the deer ( from a distance I assume ) , decided it looked ok and told my daughter that it was best left where it was as if she caught it and took it in it would be destroyed ( even if it was 100% healthy ) as it is not a native species .
I can't help wondering if the poor thing is still wandering about in the maze of town gardens or if it's back out on a main road ( possibly going to be the cause of a car accident ).
I wonder what the home owners thought when they got back and found the note saying " there is a deer in your back garden , just leave the gate open and let it wander off ! )

I hope so too Stray : ))

Odd thing was , that when my youngest heard the tale she said she had seen a small deer the day before in the recreation ground ( about half a mile from the one her sister saw getting bumped ) I bet it was the same one , trying to work it's way through the town and back to the freedom of the countryside...........I do hope it's made it out of town now .

Lots of Muntjak dear living in town gardens that never go near the countryside.

Your probably right Bernard . I've spotted the odd one in the countryside here but not seen/ heard of them in the town before .
