All it needs is a little respect,

You seem to see this sort of desecration in a lot of places in the world. And yes it is sad. My great grandparents are right by a main road and their gravestone is in good nick - my cousin goes and re silvers their names every so often and you can actually read them as you drive by but other sites further back from the road have been damaged. Obviously having a front row seat has its advantages.

My parents have a military plaque - they met at the end of the war and both served in that war tho only my mother went overseas. The military section where they are has the most wonderful view on a hilly slope looking out to sea. I just hope it stays that way and is not used as a bit of prime real estate in years to come.

I had to take out insurance on my daughter's headstone as I was so worried that it would be vandalised, and fear there will be destruction etc everytime I visit there, she is in an area that is rather tucked away and not many marked graves around where she lays. It's only a tiny headstone, about 18" x 12" but the yew tree next to her is getting bigger and bigger, stopping anything pretty growing on the grave now and I worry that a branch will come down and damage the stone or the man with the mower will do something stupid, in the past one workman mowed over the grave and cut down all the little rose trees, mini ones, that were flowering there. His remark to his boss was something like, what does it matter - they can't see the flowers. He was transferred to a different job straightaway, now mowes the park nearby. Good thing I wasn't around, I would have thumped him!
He wasn't a teenage yob either, he was a man in his thirties doing his job, but not doing it properly. No respect, what an idiot.

How can anyone be so cruel as to damage a headstone, some people have no respect :O(

Here in Germany the cemetaries are so well tended, my daughters friend passed away this month and when we went to the funeral we went passed many old headstones and every one was tended and had flowers and mementos on it.

Tomorrow i it the day when all the families will go to pay their respect to loved ones they have lost, they will tend the graves and place flower arrangements and candles on them and the look beautiful ........... such a shame to see the way many of our cemetaries are left in a state of dis-repair nowadays :O(

It's usually the old and slightly wonky headstones that are the target for vandals and probably one reason why the authorities want to lay them flat apart from the fact they may fall on someone.

There are also those who use graveyards for black magic purposes and those who break into churches to perform acts of desecration.

What a world!

I know exactly what you mean Keith and have had a lot to do with churchyards especially, but just a thought, they haven't been laid down for safety's sake have they? A lot of red tape about nowadays and some authorities are laying down headstones which look dangerous.

Locally in a churchyard, we now literally have tape around a monument which has been leaning over for donkey's years. Such is life....or death!

We had some trouble last year with headstones being pulled down ..YOBS
I am happy to say the only things knocked down in my local village Churchyard are the vases and pots with flowers in.They get blown over in the wind .I walk around there a couple of times a week and always put them upright again lol.
I just don't understand some peoples mentality. The mind boggles.

I think desecration of graveyards is awful and unecessary too!
Makes you wonder what's going on with their half bain cell.
Hopefully, when I die, I'll go to the same place as my BIL - a woodland cemetery, with a large tree planted over me.
Like to see the idiots try to kick that over!!

Several members of my family have been cremated, but they all have a small flat memorial stone. There is space left on our son's for me and OH when our time comes.

Ouch.

I must say, that over in Belgium and France the municipal cemetries are lovely too. Very well looked after and always full of flowers. It's a sad indictment of the world we live in today that we can't instil the same measure of respect in our children (well, I could in my child but you know what I mean!).
