How to save Sky+ shows onto DVD

Once you’ve tasted the sweet luxury of Sky+ you’ll find it filled up with shows in just a month or two. Don’t delete those recordings though. Archive them to DVD, freeing up space on Sky+, but keeping recordings to watch whenever you like!
Step 1: Grab a DVD recorder
Saving shows from Sky+ is simple. You could do it using a VHS recorder, but it’s a pointless exercise, since the quality will be atrocious, and your recordings will degrade over time.
Instead, get yourself a DVD recorder, and hook it up to the Sky+ box’s second Scart socket using a Scart cable.
Step 2: Load up on blank discs
Once your recording set-up is complete, get yourself some blank discs. Be careful though. Not all DVD recorders will accept the same format discs. There’s DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM and DVD+DL to choose from.
Have a quick look in your recorder’s manual, and then use this PriceRunner page to make sure you buy the right discs, and don’t have problems recording to them.
Step 3: Select and copy your shows
Now you’ve got a bunch of discs, insert one into the DVD recorder and head into the Sky+ planner. Highlight a recorded programme and press the red button to mark it for copying.
You can repeat this process for as many shows as you like (being careful not to choose programmes longer than the DVD you’re coping them to.
When you’ve finished marking programmes, press the Select button on the Sky remote, press record on your DVD recorder, then then press play on the Sky remote.
Your shows will begin to copy. You’ll have to wait until they’re finished copying across before using the Sky set-top box again, although you can press any button on the Sky remote during the process to cancel copying.
Must-have accessories
Scart cable – You can connect your Sky+ box to a DVD recorder using a standard aerial cable, but you shouldn’t. The quality won’t be anything near that offered by a Scart lead. Pay a little more, and you’ll get shows in the same quality they were recorded which, thanks to Sky+, is the same quality they were broadcast too!
