We have no idea where J. Smith was adopted, presumably Norfolk but we have no info at all and no idea how to find out. All we know is his name and could probably work out his birthdate and the info from the Aunt that he was adopted.

I will have to ask o.h.'s father if he knows where he is buried so I can see if the birthdate etc is there.

You can write to the

Adoptions Clerk, Magistrates Court for the area your father was adopted in.

I did this for my mother's adoption file but for me the outcome wasn't good but I persisted with tacing the original birth cert and I have actually got it a few weeks ago,

Good Luck I hope you are successful.

Adoption did not become legal until 1927

Prior to that other members of a family may have stepped in

Where do we phone? My o.h.'s greatgrandfather was apparently adopted, all the family know is that it was mentioned by an aunt but she is dead now so no info there. His surname was/is Smith, but no one knows if that is his real name or adopted parent's surname. It would be interesting to find out who he really was.

they should have the info from prior to adoption
my gran was adopted in 1914
when my brother phoned cardiff for details of her birth certificate some time ago, they told him her real name at birth and she was illegal adoption
we never knew that at all,

so try phoning um or write to um for your dads info,
they should have it

I know the court that registered the adoption was in Southend do I need to ask them for further information and do you think that they will help me or not ?
