On a marriage certificate received, the residence is shown as G'Ilford in the County of Essex. Can anyone tell me what G'Ilford is short for? As I live in Australia I am not familiar with the London areas.

Wickepedia shows this so it may be short for Great Ilford which is now Ilford.

'Ilford was historically known as Great Ilford to differentiate it from nearby Little Ilford, in the London Borough of Newham. The name is first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ilefort and means ford over the Hyle; an old name for the River Roding that means "trickling stream". Little Ilford shares the origin.'

Thank you both for this information - most of my ancestors were from Barking/Poplar area but this was a new name to me.

I have come to a stand-still in my search for ancestors and appreciate the help I have been given. The further back I go the harder it gets! Still - will keep looking.

Cheers
