I agree with you Ronald - by and large, in this country, there should be no need for people to go without the necessities of life. Whatever we think of this government of the other lot, we do have a welfare state and health service, of which we should be proud.

On the other hand, there are millions of people in this world - of which we are all citizens - for whom this doesn't apply.

We take it as our right to go to hospital if we're ill, have our children schooled at no direct cost to us, get from (a) to (b) by road or public transport etc etc. Whatever the faults of this country in this century - there are far worse places and times!

For those in need there is usually help available. They should check their entitlement to Benefits (CAB can do this for them) - amazing how many people are entitled but don't claim.

If they are ex forces or spouses/widows of ex forces they can contact their local office of SSAFA-Forces Help or the RBL.

There are all sort of civilian charities who might be able to help.

A good site for civvy charities is www.turn2us.org.uk

Many churches nationwide do this at christmas time,to people within their parishes.

Dont know how the selection works.but there will be many for who it will make some small difference.

Its like the shoeboxes for our troops.I supose.

Oh I am all for living the life of the wealthy....If one has made it in life...good for them...just wish it as me lol....I don't begrudge anyone their wealth and who are we to tell them how to spend it......I know how I would spend mine.....but individuals only make a small difference.....a mere drop in the ocean.......We also don't know for certain how the wealthy spend theirs....for all we know they could give huge amounts to charity.

This type of Parcel has been distributed for as long as I can remember. Not all fall neatly into the category set out by means testers.

Sometimes it is a case of...shall we heat the house, buy something for dinner, pay an overdue bill. etc etc...or even buy new shoes, a coat, the dentist, optician ( not everyone gets credits and many fall between the gaps ( No...not me .....I can think of many who aren't scroungers but go without In this land of so called wealth)

Well I hope it goes to the right people and not the spongers who do nothing to help themselves.

Recommendations by GPs, social services, CAB and Ceredigion Care. The parcels are funded by a church!!! Not mainstream either!

Announced in our local paper that food parcels containing enough tins/packets to feed a family for three days are being given out to those struggling.

FGS this is Britain in 2009 and we are making ever more retrograde steps where social welfare is concerned.

God help the poor pensioners this winter. If they have a large heating bill they can (and should) collect one of these parcels. I imagine that many wont through pride!

I hope the fat cats in Westminster feel some bloody shame!
