There are two silences Allan one at 11.00am today and one on the 11th. Today is the Sunday closest to the 11th and traditionally the day on which the Royal Family and nation as a whole stops to remember.

My daughters, grandson and I attended the service at our town war memorial.
There is always a strong military presence as this is near Shorncliffe Barracks. Being so close to the Channel coast, townsfolk from our twin towns in France and Belgium always come over to join in the service and the March Past afterwards.
Just as the relayed chimes of Big Ben ceased today, our parading firemen and women had a 'shout' and had to rush off. They are a reserve group, so they are all needed when the call comes..... a reminder that they too are another group who selflessly answer the call to help others.

After the service we went to look at the wreaths and tributes. Every year there is also a hand-tied bunch of flowers from a local man in memory of his father who died at Arras in the 1st World War...... a whole lifetime without a father, but his memory honoured there.
