Len of the Chilterns

Len of the Chilterns Report 14 Nov 2009 22:59

Men should urinate outside on their compost heaps to help fertilise their gardens and save on flushing the lavatory, the National Trust has urged.
Peeing on a compost heap activates the composting process, helping to produce a ready supply of organic matter.

The rather unusual practice is already actively encouraged at stately homes around the country where "pee bales" have been deposited in secluded areas of National Trust gardens to allow male members of staff to relieve themselves. The Trust, which actively campaigns on climate change, said answering the call of nature outside saves both on water and the energy used in flushing the lavatory.

Urine can also speed up the chemical process in the compost heap, making it a better fertiliser to help grow vegetables and save even more energy in reducing food miles. Male urine is better than female urine because it is slightly less acidic. (beer?)

At Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire up to 20 male staff are being encouraged to use a straw "pee bale" that is then added to the compost heap and eventually spread on the garden and fields.

Rosemary Hooper, Wimpole estate’s in-house 'master composter', who provides composting advice to visitors, encouraged anyone to urinate on their compost heap. “Most people can compost in some way in their own gardens," she said "Peeing on a compost heap activates the composting process helps to produce a ready supply of lovely organic matter to add back to the garden."

Its the " Ammonia cycle "

bloody hell Len ......what is going on in our world ...

the victorians have spent money and time getting boys to pee in toilets which has proved unsucessful as the toilet is never big enought ....do you think the Pee bales are bigger so they cant miss.....

Personally I think its women whom did this research .....they are fed up with cleaning up pee missed toilets in doors!!

Dear All

Hello

Love your posts Len.

People pass water regularly at our local allotment
on our vegetable patches. Only this is called anti-social behaviour!

They really need to be potty trained.

Best wishes
xx

I'm with Kempinasunhat, They can't hit the sodding lavatory, lets see if they can manage the compost heap.

Why CAN'T you men manage to pee in a straight line?

Do you all imagine that you are writing in the snow?

Hi Len,

I have told o.h. to do that for a long time lol
I saw the piece on a gardening programme the other evening, they had a dispenser for hand cleanser on a post next to the bale lol

I suppose if the men's loos got too busy when people were visiting the garden they could use the bale too lol

If they also wee on the veg lot, would the onions be pickled before they were pulled?

Uggers Report 16 Nov 2009 09:45

I don't know why they don't want women's urine - works just as well. I know a couple of women who wee in buckets and then add it to the compost:)

Well diluted urine works wonders on lawns:)
