I'm waiting to see how my son & DiL's dog reacts to their new baby, born Saturday but not home yet.

Congrats Brian.

One of my dogs is very protective of my daughter ~the other really doesn`t bother.
Sometimes when i have to tell her off ~he comes top me and barks like mad at me.

When my son was a baby we would put him out in the pram and the spaniel wouls sit by him and warn off anyone who came to look. We took them both to stay with my parents onece, and left them with Dad while we went out. When we came back he had been crying, but Gyp wouldnt let them into the bedroom to see what was wrong!

My son, now 17, spent a lot of his childhood in the dog's bed! The dog, Tessa, an elderly German Shepherd, was very protective of him. When he was 3 he could take her up the lane on her lead and, although we were following discretely behind, it was funny to watch the neighbours; faces!

When she died we had her cremated and her ashes put into a lovely pine box complete with silk flowers. My son used to go to bed hugging this box - and we tried to think this wasn't strange. He has grown out of this, thank heavens.

His older brother has the ashes of one of our cats in his wardrobe and is particularly attached to our 12 year old cat.....

My Nana and Grandad had a dog, Butch, who was part alsation crossed with whatever. He was extremely protective towards little ones.

In the crescent where they lived mothers would put their babies outside their front doors in the pram in the sunshine. Butch would go and lay down beside the prams and babysit. He wouldn't even let the fathers go near the babies and growled at them, only stopping when the mother came back. Everyone trusted him.

I used to have a " collie x " years ago , when I bought my first baby home she took up residence under the carry cot and would growl if any one went to look at the baby , it was a gentle growl , just to let who ever it was know that she was there on guard duty .
I used to leave the buggy outside shops with the dog sitting on guard duty , mind you she did eat the " bikkie peg " that was dangling on it's ribbon one day . Bless her : ))

love reading these heartwarming storys of how they are so protective

our old dog whose gone now, dear molly,
she met little madam,
and lay beside her as a babe tho molly was 10 at that point,
sadly molly didnt last too long after, just long enough to be so contented when she saw our daughter (whom she slept beside every night) with her own little baby, and shed sit beside um both,
or go to daugther for cuddle while i had babe to cuddle,

strangely grandaughter who was only bout 9months when molly went, seems to have some recollection, and insisted the new pup be called molly somewhere in her name,
