Tenerife Sun Report 17 Nov 2009 16:28

We have visitors arriving today for a weeks holiday in the sun. Yesterday afternoon it started to rain and rain and rain...It was torrential and the television news was full of it, mabe it was on the the news in England. It rained all night. At least 6 people have died and over 100 injured. This morning the sun was shining and we began mopping up ready to greet our visitors. My husband has gone to the airport to meet them and the rain has returned with a vengeance!! It is pouring down the road and the barrancos are like rivers. Ann who is a member on here is also in Tenerife on holiday at Los Gigantes.

I really hope it dries up soon for everyone who is on holiday.

I knew I shouldn't have cleaned the windows yesterday morning.

Hi Wendy,

sounds like the holiday I had in Malta in 2007 altho I don't think anyone died there. It's so depressing when you look forward to a holiday and then it rains, makes me really fed up.

I hope the sun will come out for all those on holiday at the mo.

Please send it to me, we are in drought. If its rain, send it, if it is snow, send it, if it is hail, send it, as long as it contains moisture I do not care.

Bad as that eh Gail? I would happily swap some of our winter weather when it comes for some sunshine! Quite blustery outside again, leaves swirling everywhere, hope my hedgehogs are snuggled somewhere, there was at least one out on Monday evening eating some sunflower seeds I had put in their dish.

take care

Hi Liz, we are down 300 mils for the year, when you only get under 600 mil a year it is a huge drop we are missing. Things are getting desperate. I suppose it is something we live with, but grass is dead and we are just keeping plants and trees alive at the moment. 38 degree temps do not help either.

Should not complain, I choose to live here. Major worry with bushfires again this year though. Snakes are just so plentiful as well this year, rotten brown ones as well, the blacks I do not mind as they are shy and do not hang around long.

which state are you in??

I have a friend who's talking about how low the Murray is

We have many relatives and friends in Australia, and hope to be back down there for a visit in 2011.

Hope you don't get any bushfires near you and yours (or any of the folk we know on the boards) and the snakes stay away too, I wouldn't like that much but I suppose you get used to keeping a lookout for the snakes, and are careful regarding fires.

You take care of yourself.

off to bed now, night love.

Sylvia, I live in New South Wales, along the east coast it is not so bad, but over the mountains we are getting desperate.

All our river systems are dire, Murray included.

Gail

my best friend from high school back in England lives in Mudgee

.... at least, I think she still does.

We last saw her in 2006, and she was suffering from Parkinsons. I talked to her on the phone 6 months later and things had progressed so fast that I could barely understand her speech. She'd already lost the ability to write .. and never worked out email.

She said in 2006 that they hadn't had rain in 8 years .... she was very involved with the volunteer fire people.

I was hoping to meet up with Lew in 2011, if we had got to Mudgee.

Our last drought was about 10 years duration, we thought in 2008 it had finally broken, now bad again. We get some rain, but not enough to fill the tank.

Well our visitors arrived mid storm they have never been here before so I was hoping that their first impression of Tenerife would be a good one. They don't seem to be as concerned about the bad weather as we were.

Today has been dry so far and we were able to take them out and about a bit and now they have gone for a walk on their own.

I just feel so sorry for people on holiday who have perhaps saved all year for just a week away.

Gail... I wish I could send you some of our rain and if I could I would.

Glad we steered clear of November then Wendy. You have had rain like that before. We did see in the paper the cliff fall at Los Gigantes. Where have the deaths been this time or are you talking about the same one?

Haven't you also got a tenant in the apartment this month? Bet the patio was awash!

Hi Ann

November is always a very temperamental month, last week was very hot and sunny. All of Tenerife have had a lot of rain but the north has had thunder lightening etc as well. The deaths were 'on the island' as ststed on the news although I know that two were around here, one was in La Oratava. I Googled rain in North Tenerife yesterday ans watched a couple of video clips showing the damage it was causing. On Monday 5 flights due to arrive in the south were diverted to Gran Canaria, luckily our visitors yesterday weren't but the pilot said he was taking a different route in to avoid the worst of the bad weather.

Kathy, in the apartment, is alright but the rain managed to go throug the apartment terrace into our garage an put the electrics out and this morning we couldn't open the gate or the Garage door!! Mike is down there now trying to fix it.

Hope you are both well

We are fine, goodness that was some rain then. It must be a long time since flights were unable to land in the South. Is that the first time that water has got through from the terrace? Maybe something has shifted.
Hope he has managed to fix it OK, inconvenient not being able to get out of the gate!!!
