I went to several schools when I was small, with my parents cosntantly moving around. My first school taught using ABC (ay Bee cee), and I was getting on quite well. Then I was moved to another school which taught using the phonetic alphabet (ah, buh, cuh) and it was like a foreign language to me, and had me crying my heart out in frustration, being told by my teacher I was working the spellings out incorrectly.

Thankfully I went back to my original school eventually....

Teresa , I can see the sense in phonetics up to a point, but listening to this child spelling out words it just seemed so difficult, as the sounds of the letters bear no relation to the way the word sounds . I just learned the A B C and reading whole words, the cat sat on the mat lol.

OH well, at least we were taught, as such. Seems these days the trend is to leave kids to work it out for themselves.

I still go cold when I hear phonetics...that's the effect the changes had on me. lol

I was thinking a few day back about my first school, the little lined books to write letters and the squared pages for sums, but mainly the sand and water troughs for measuring and the wooden jigsaw puzzles of a cat with her kitten , and the red London bus :)) the little cubes for measuring and those little coloured sticks ( they have a name which escapes me ) two red ones = a green one, that kind of thing for learning halves and quarters .

Rose, that was playing, that was.... I went straight into the sitting at a desk, in a row, and real proper learning...... I missed the playing in the sandpit... only the September and January intake got that.

And I got told off on my first day for not having a proper hankie... I had a piece of rag... clean, but a rag, none the less.

Love

Daff xxxx

I remember nature walks at this time of year, walking along in pairs in a long crocodile, picking up leaves and feeling cold in the frost.

I also remember those huge prickly coconut mats we used to have to use. I hated them!

Daff , I was ever so lucky lol being born in Dec I should have started school in the previous Sept, but my lovely mum decided actually 5 was young enough so I started in the Jan :) but that water play worked I never forgot that 8 pint bottles of water made a gallon :)

Oh god TW those coconut mats were horrendous. I loved the nature walks though , catkins in the spring :)

and do you remember the printing set with clock faces for learning to tell the time, and the cards where the word was printed on the bottom piece that you had to match to the picture at the top?

Rose, I remember those little plastic milk bottles we used to use, that's how I learned 8 pints to a gallon too, and those cards.
